Did we really need to know

that Ian Thorpe is gay?

It was front page news on one paper I saw at the shop this morning.

why do we need to know? what did it matter? we don't have headlines saying people are het?

Poor guy has been hounded for years over his soxuality, I hope he finds some peace and happiness now.

I agree, not news. The only sad thing is, I wonder how much mental anguish he might have saved himself if he hadn't "come out" to begin with. It's not like "star athlete is gay" is ground breaking anymore.

I guess they are less likely to come out oif its going to be headline news every where. Who wants that kind of attention? Its not like being gay has any bearing on their sporting ability.

it was obvious many years ago that he was Gay.....not that it matters to me. He was the only one refusing to 'come out' and therefore be honest with himself. Nobody else gives a hoot these days.

Punch, I think if he had, right at the start, said "yep I'm gay" no one would have cared and he could have just got on with his life, just like so many other gay people, famous or not, do every other day.

there are lots of reasons people don't come out. I feel sorry for him that he's been pressured so much over the years and that when he finally did come out, its made front page news.

But that's been known for years!

He's just publicly acknowledged it is all. Don't know why he felt he had to do that, either. Probably just to set the record straight for his own peace of mind.

It's really none of anyone's business other than his and his family's.

Pressured?! Just don't get this mentality, sorry, when this guy was in the news media and limelight for donkeys - and often used the opportunity to launch his clothing line etc. Nope he never 'shied' away from the media did he? I mean now he is using same platform to get $400,000 for goodness sakes. Please get real on perspective.....this is an experienced, media savvy opportunist at work. Gay or not gay he is $Dollar orientated in this and if he were under soooo much mental and emotional anguish he would shy away from any sort of media.

........give me a break.

He's been hounded to answer a question that is nobody elses business. It's so easy for people to say it's been obvious for years, or known for years but who's to say it hasn't been a struggle for him to accept or acknowledge for years.

In which stereotype indication book do you determine a person is gay just by looking?

He was in the news, media and the limelight for donkeys because he was one of our tops sports people, an Olympian- that was beyond his control. he had to do interviews and stuff. and I think he has over the years shied away from the media- he even went and lived in another country to get away from everything and have some anonymity.

I dont agree with how much people, famous or otherwise get paid to do media interviews but that's the way it is. people can get paid ridiculous amounts of money to do an interview, and he's no exception.
