Council Cleanup/Hardwaste Collections

My OH loves 'em.
He piles all our junk on the nature strip and then takes a somewhat unhealthy interest in people stopping and looking over what's there. I tell him, if it goes, it goes. I don't care who takes it, scavangers or council workers.

I think it's his favourite time of year LOL

They might technically be hardwaste collections, but my council

likes to think of them as 'nature strip recycling'. lol

They say only 3 square metres to be put out, but by the time

everybody has taken what they want, I actually put out about

12 square metres from my MIL's house, saving paying $100's for a very

large skip.

We covered our whole nature strip last time with scrap metal waste. One guy took nearly all of it in 2 trips, his trailer was piled so high we were worried he'd lose half it when he drove off

Our council has stopped them which is a shame because I'd rather people take what they can re-use rather than tip them down the dump which is where it goes now.

I know a Lady, that actually decorated her entire home with "Hard Rubbish" . BTW it looked fabulous. She used to hurtle around, have a looksee at what was there, grab itand off she'd go. It took well over a year to do but cost her Zero $. People would often go out to her and say "Would you like this also" . Wish I had her OOOMPH. 🙂 Amazing what people would toss out.

I have made an in-depth observation of hard waste for Council collection.

The lower economic areas have more plastic ~~rubbish~~ toys/outdoor furniture; and foam-type lounges.

The middle areas have old fridges, bbqs, wooden furniture, electrical appliances.

The high economic areas have almost nothing.

In our area, a fellow with a trailer travels around with his tool kit. He collects electrical leads (for copper) and removes the motors from fridges, etc. and takes any hard metal.

I admit to collecting an old ornate flyscreen door. It is now a piece of art in the garden which a mandevilla vine is utilising.

I've always said rich people don't have rubbish.

I agree LL. the more expenisve the suburb, the less stuff there is.

Around here its the norm for people to come and grab stuff, if I put stuff out most of its gone by the time the workers come to get it. - electrical cords are the first to go for the copper. its amazing what people will take.

One time I got a really cool fish tank- its amazing what people throw out.

I miss the old way of doing it. Here we have to phone the council for a pick up & we're entitled to do it twice a year. Last time we put stuff out, it all disappeared. Absolutely every little thing had gone, but the pile out the front had been replaced with someone else's stuff. Lol

I don't have a problem with anyone taking anything to,me it's recycling and it's a good thing

I once saw, in the Inner Suburbs of Melb, in Hard Rubbish and Old Victorian Fire Surround complete with beautiful carvings & Tiles. I dragged it home ( nearly killing myself ) only to find it was too big. I really had no use for it, so took it out the front of my place, leant it up againt the tree and within 5 mins there was a knock on the Front Door. Would you mind at all if I took the Surround. Nah not at all, just take it. He gave me $50.00 for helping him put it in his Van. That money went towards my Hernia Op. LOL.

We had a pushbike that went through 3 or 4 different hard rubbish collections before leaving the street. It started on ours where a neighbour picked it up and used it till the next collection, where it strangely ended up back at our place, put it out on the next one where it was picked up by yet another neighbour before finally disappearing when they put it out on the one after that. lol, with hard rubbish only twice a year it was about 2 years that thing haunted me for before finally disappearing.

On the Darling Downs many years ago, the ex found 3 drawers at the tip; the days when you took stuff and brought home more. He built a massive cupboard around them. Which was known as the "junk drawer" cupboard. He still owns it.

We seem to get a lot mattresses, bedding and furniture at ours. Crockery, kitchenware, cd's, videos computer parts.

Backpackers and contract workers can furnish their flats with what's out there.

Last time at our hard rubbish, hubby bought home 2 cane chairs for the verandah, all they needed was a coat of paint. Another time he bought home insulation that hadnt been used, still all wrapped up.................hubbys motto is, if it looks good, take it & it will come in handy one day.

My daughter down near where she works were having hard rubbish collection, she got a brand new cat pole thingy, where the cat can sit on top as well as scratch the claws.

Another thing hubby got last time were 3 beautiful made timber doors, with glass in the top...........have no idea what he will do with them......could sell them on ebay.

I reckon about 40% of our furniture is kerbside pickups. Plus we have a garage full of stuff that we pick up to sell on ebay - people throw away so much useful and good quality stuff.

Last weekend I made $800 from 2 items that we picked up. Gave them a good clean and listed them.

When I see a council kerbside cleanup I just see dollars laying on the side of the road.

I just remembered I picked up a rabbit hutch a couple of days ago. One of those double story timber things with doors and an opening roof. It looked almost new.

It would have cost me $150 new.

I love how our council does a couple of hard waste type cleanups each year - makes getting rid of broken / useless stuff so much easier. Where we used to live, they never did them and when we got a skip in prior to moving we kept catching people dumping stuff onto it. I'd say at least half the contents were not ours as the neighbours go clever and would sneek stuff in after dark.

We have one going currently here, so far they have remved the wheels from an old golf cart, 7 (out of 2 full sets) of decorative tyre / wheel trims, a broken standard lamp and 2 old (broken) metal ladders. Anything with electric cords seems to loose the cords very fast!
