PETALING JAYA: The unofficial list of the MH17 flight manifest states that 20 Malaysians and two infants were on board the plane that was reportedly shot down by insurgents near the Russian-Ukrainian border.

The highest number of passengers are from Netherlands with 143 passengers. Australia comes in second with 27 passengers.

There were 11 Indonesian passengers and one infant on-board the ill-fated flight. Britain has six passengers, France and Germany have four each, Belgium have three and Canada one.

Nationalities of the other 58 passengers were not stated in the list. 15 MAS crew members were on the plane.

MH17 was brought down over eastern Ukraine on Thursday, killing all 295 people aboard and sharply raising the stakes in

a conflict between Kiev and pro-Moscow rebels in which Russia and the West back opposing sides

I don't think it crashed....the report was being careful in its accusations

US intelligence has been able to confirm that a ground to air missile was launched.

Putin phoned Obama to tell him about it..... and it is reported apologized???

The separatists have retrieved the black boxes...

"Dutch news channel NOS said at least 154 Dutch citizens were aboard the aircraft. 27 Australians, 23, Malaysians, 11, Indonesian, six British, four German, four Belgian, three Filipinos and one Canadian were also on board. The nationalities of the remaining passengers have not yet been announced."

Shortly before reports surfaced that a Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777 had crashed in eastern Ukraine, a social media site purported to belong to a separatist leader claimed that insurgents had shot down an aircraft.

In a post on VKontakte, Russia's largest social media site, which has since been taken down, separatist leader Igor Girkin, aka Strelkov, wrote: "In the vicinity of Torez, we just downed a plane, an AN-26. It is lying somewhere in the Progress Mine. We have issued warnings not to fly in our airspace. We have video confirming. The bird fell on a waste heap. Residential areas were not hit. Civilians were not injured."

The AN-26 is a Soviet-built twin-engine transport plane used by the Ukrainian military. Torez is a small city of 80,000 located some 40 kilometers east of Donetsk. Included in the post were two videos that showed a rising plume of black smoke in the distance.

The claim was posted at 5:50 pm Moscow time, shortly before reports surfaced that the Malaysian civilian aircraft, on a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, had crashed in eastern Ukraine in the same area near the Russian border.

A Ukrainian Interior Ministry adviser, Anton Herashchenko, claimed the plane had been shot down by a ground-to-air missile.

Andrei Purgin, the self-styled first vice premier of the unrecognized Donetsk People's Republic, told Interfax the separatists do not have weapons that could shoot down a plane flying at an altitude of 10,000 meters.

Both Ukrainian and Russian authorities have denied shooting down the Malaysian passenger aircraft.

Yes, I would say so. Unless the plane was badly off its course, then there is nothing that would connect this to the missing plane.

Hundreds of airlines out there and I'm sure so many fly over similar area. What are the odds it's the same airline again.???I have a feeling Malaysian airline is going to lose a lot of customers whether it's a coincidence or not.

shocking news to wake up to this morning.

it would take some pretty sophisticated weapons to shoot down a plane cruising at some 30,000 odd thousand feet wouldn't it??

I grieve for all that are involved in the loss of lives.

I have been looking at news reports this morning. It is not clear what is wreckage from this plane or whether stock film footage is being used.

There is talk that parts are strewn over a 10 kilometre area.

There is talk of a ground to air missile attack. But the question is the actual range of such missiles.

There is a picture of a major section of an aircraft still burning on the ground.

To me it appears, that the tail section of the plane was hit. With the result that the plane dropped to the ground exploding on impact.

The odds are exactly the same for every plane flying through that area. That is the thing with odds, it has nothing to do with what happened before.

Yet a few days earlier the same source confirmed that they (the separatist) had capture a long range BOL surface to air missile system which has an effective operational range of 25 kilometres and they would be using it to enforce to establish a no fly zone.

Now add the following.

The reports state the passenger aircraft was travelling at it normal cruising altitude of 10 kilometres (10,000 metres). The effective reach of the BOL is 25,000 metre. That is two hand half time further than the height the aircraft was travelling.

The reports also state that separatist though the aircraft they were engaging was an AN 26. This aircraft has a maximum service ceiling of 7.5 kilometres. That is 2.5 kilometres lower than the altitude of the aircraft being engaged.

That is any competent operator would have immediately realised that the target being engaged could not possibly have been an AN 26

This is not a case of simple tragic accident. It is a case of the kind of tragic consequences which rise when you place sophisticated weapons systems in the hands of people not trained to use them.
