Fairfax Apologises Over Cartoon

The Sydney Morning Herald has retracted and apologised for publishing a cartoon described by Jewish leaders as racist and admitted it was a serious error of judgment to publish it.

The cartoon, which accompanied a column by Mike Carlton last month, has been removed from the paper’s websites.

Jewish community leaders and many others had written to the Herald to complain about the cartoon and the Australian Jewish News had called for its readers to boycott Fairfax Media’s publications.

I guess you cant blame people for wanting to have a look, it's curiosity getting the better of people. If something like that was happening near my home and I could see it I dont think I'd just close all the curtains and ignore what was going on, I'd be curious and probably have to check it out for myself...

That's ok, just make sure no cartoonist makes a sketch about you being a spectator.

Good point. I agree though that the cartoon was in bad taste, there is no room for satire in regards to war imo.

Another point to consider here also is those Israelis obviously feel safe and secure and have the freedom to be able sit upon the sidelines and watch.

In fact, that paragraph within the quotation marks was written by an Israeli. Gideon Levy is a columnist and editorial board member of the daily newspaper Ha’aretz. Born in Tel Aviv to parents who fled the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939, he despairs of what his country has become and the catastrophe its armed forces are visiting upon Gaza. After a recent column calling on Israeli pilots to stop bombing and rocketing civilians, his life was threatened and he now has a bodyguard day and night. It has come to that. In the worst insult of all, Levy is branded "a self-hating Jew".

I think some jews took affence and others agree with his point of view.

As the cartoonist said, he based on cartoon on photos of people treating the Israeli bombardment of Gaza as a spectator show.

His remarks were not anti semetic. They were both pertaining to Israels involvement in Gaza/Palestine. Just because a person disagrees with the role that Israel is playing in this war does not make them anti-semetic.

He has not been "investigated" for racism now or at any other time. A public compliant has been logged by the Press Council who's charter requires them to address any complaints from members of the public. He has not been charged. And I repeat again, he is not being investigated.

In 2010 a complaint was put forward to the Press Council that was rejected outright. The Press Council is not the law. They have no legislation. They did not "investigate" him. They LOOKED INTO the compaint and issued an statement that supported their OPINION that the article at the time was not racist.

This week, the Herald apologised not because they considered the new cartoon racist or that they agreed that the 'big nose' referenced Hitlers cartoons. They apologised because they understood that the conflict is a sensitive religious issue and a cartoon could be deemed distressing.

I repeat again Mike Carlton has not been "investigated" for racism. Perhaps you are clutching at straws to balance out another journalist (right winged of course) who WAS charged with racism?

I also note that all the Murdoch press have only quoted very small parts of the Herald apology and have strung together sentences that make it appear that they are apologising for something that they are not. As usual the Telegraph et al are completely misrepresenting the truth and some Australians are being well and truly sucked in because they can't be bothered looking at facts.

I should also point out that the complaint to the Press Council was not about the narrative of the cartoon. The complaint to the Press Council specifically was about the character being portrayed having a big nose.

The Herald rightly points out that all of the cartoonists characters have big noses. They did not pull this cartoon because of this. They pulled the cartoon for another reason altogether - because they felt that the religious symbols connected to the action being portayed was religiously sensitive at this time.

The Press Council do not INVESTIGATE issues of racism. They CONSIDER complaints from the public.

They considered a complaint from one person in 2010. The complaint was dismissed when the Press Council reviewed the article.

And I repeat that the 2010 article was about Carltons view on the Palestine/Israel and was not anti-semetic as you keep suggesting.

Carlton was investigated for his racist views and the press council considered it's response.
