if the general population knew how many mine jobs are taken up by the Irish you would be outraged. Why do they employ them because they actually work not whinge and carry on like aussies do. It was happening long before Abbott took the reins too.

Most people I know have no difficulty working hard without whinging or carrying on about anything.

It's a bit harsh to pre-judge the entire population as whinging and carrying on.

There has been 11 deaths in the Mining industry this year, don't know what aussies could have to whinge about.

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) launched a new television advertisement and campaign, as governments around the country watered down workplace safety protections yesterday.

And as the Victorian Government downgrades the role of its workplace safety agency, WorkCover, the CFMEU has announced a commitment to increase the number of its health and safety representatives in Victoria from 500 to 600 by the end of the year.

The second phase of the CFMEU's "Stand up. Speak out. Come Home." campaign was launched in Melbourne on Sunday by CFMEU National Secretary, Michael O'Connor, and ACTU President, Ged Kearney.

"A worker is seriously injured or dies every six minutes in construction, forestry and mining – a rate 50 per cent higher than all other industries combined," CFMEU National Secretary, Michael O'Connor said.

An analysis of the first six months of Labour Market Testing in the 457 Visa scheme undertaken by the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) has found fewer 457 Visa approvals in job categories where employers are required to first test the local labour market.

It has prompted the CFMEU to call for an overhaul of the 457 Visa scheme, and apply Labour Market Testing to all 457 Visa categories. Currently less than 35 per cent of 457 Visa nominations are subject to Labour Market Testing – which requires employers to test the local labour market first to demonstrate there is not a suitably qualified Australian resident to fill the position.

The CFMEU's findings come as:unemployment reaches a 12 year high and youth unemployment is at a 14 year highthe Government is considering a "designated area migration agreement" for the Northern Territory that will allow employers easy access to thousands of overseas workers.Government figures show the number of occupations in shortage is "at an historic low". 1

"Our analysis proves that when forced to look local first, employers are finding qualified candidates. So to scrap this requirement would shut out qualified locals – which would be unthinkable in the current labour market," CFMEU National Secretary, Michael O'Connor said.

The Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) has slammed the proposed "designated area migration agreement" for the Northern Territory that will allow employers easy access to thousands of overseas workers.

The union, who raised serious allegations about 457 Visa abuses at Australia's biggest mining project, Gina Rinehart's Roy Hill five months ago, said the Government was destroying the job opportunities of locals while allowing the exploitation of overseas workers.

"With a surge in unemployment rates and a growing crisis in youth unemployment, the proposed deal in the Northern Territory is a kick in the teeth for those fighting for job opportunities for locals," CFMEU National Secretary Michael O'Connor said.

"With the construction boom in the resource sector coming to end we will have thousands of construction workers looking for work. This deal is irresponsible and plain dumb."

The union said the Government's move to water down the language requirement would increase the chances of overseas workers being exploited and seriously compromise safety.

"This Government doesn't seem to understand but in the industries we cover if workers can't communicate with each other, workers get killed."

The union's opposition to the NT deal came as it raised serious concerns of massive exploitation of the 457 Visa scheme, and lack of Government action over allegations in connection with the Roy Hill project.

Despite being made aware five months ago of detailed allegations of 457 Visa exploitation at Roy Hill, the Federal Government has failed to respond to the claims.

Some concern has been expressed about the rise in the number of positions sponsored in the hospitality industry. As a result, there are now limitations on sponsorship of Cooks, Chefs and Cafe/Restaurant managers. Such employees cannot be sponsored to fill positions in fast food or takeaway restaurants.

The training benchmarks remain the same - either 1% of payroll spent on training of Australians in the business, or contribution of 2% of payroll to a training fund.

see that's the thing Aussies think they work hard but in all honesty they don't. Most are very lazy when compared to others. In the mines they whinge about the heat out there, they whinge about the cold, they whinge about having to do 12 hours work, they whinge about the meals they are a pack of whinges for the most part. That's why the Irish, kiwis and chinese get the jobs.

LOL harley....

I know a man who hired a man.....actually lots of Irish men and a few Scots!....in Scotland to work on various contracts.

They were a slack bunch. Had to be supervised thoughout or they'd make a cuppa tea....or two....or three ....and find any excuse to take a break. Lunch was a few beers and then you could forget the rest of the day!!

I suggest that the only reason the Irish, the Kiwis and the Chinese and any other 457/foreigners get AUSSIE jobs is because they are all on 457 visas....and have applied for these jobs, been sponsored by bosses here - THESE JOBS WERE NOT EVEN OFFERED TO AUSSIES!!

Aussies are the hardest working bunch of people .......a days work to them is however long it takes to get the job done, to most.

how dare aussies whinge about working conditions, don't they have any idea how hard the mine owners have it - i mean really those poor down trodden billionaires who have to actually pay accountants to minimise their taxes. Poor old gina and tinkler had to buy residences in Singapore where there is no capital gains tax or inheritance tax and has one of the lowest income taxes in the world - it's disgraceful that these poor billionaire/millionaire mine owners are having to do such things, don't aussie workers know that these billionaires are a rare and precious species and must be protected above all else, including such silly things as the Great Barrier Reef. Shame on us whingers.

when I post I hope that I am sharing research and C&P's that offer insight etc and then often give my opinions in an effort to make the place a better place. Simply put the more info we have the better informed and educated we become. Awareness and knowledge is a great, great thing .....by making contributions.....not like some eh? Some just like to pop in for a bicker and rant and contribute absolutely zero

Coincidentally -'zero' is what Abbott cares about offering jobs to Aussies first, esp. youth here before foreign workers AND foreign students

.......and you may not be as concerned about unemployment especially youth unemployment,as I am in this country .

yes Katy.....I checked out the link and list of jobs.....could not for the life of me locate where our govt is offering fruit picking jobs to foreigners.......

Why is that?

Is this because Aussie Orchardists hire back packers and 457 visa holders.....

Bricklayers is mentioned - makes a big fibber out of Abetz!!.....he was telling youth to go out and lay a few bricks. Maybe he meant the young could do it for no wages/unpaid labour?
