It's a long way away and supposedly none of our business but if Scotland votes "Yes" and splits from the United Kingdom, the result could be cheaper scotch and a new Australian flag.

A late surge in the Yes vote in polls before Thursday's referendum on Scottish independence has suddenly made the world sit up and pay attention.

While banks and businesses are worried about an independent Scotland being cut out of the British pound and taking on a crippling national debt, analysts are also considering the fate of the Union Jack.

Losing Scotland's St Andrew's Cross would leave the Union Jack without its blue background and diagonal white stripes.

It could also result in a rethink of Australia's flag and the Union Jack's place on it.

Dr Oliver said a vote for independence would leave Scotland worse off, thanks to higher national debt and declining income from its North Sea oilfields.

'The people of Scotland may be less inclined to trust Alex Salmond with the nation’s future after learning that he would have cost punters nearly £3,000 if they had followed his racing tips.

Salmond was once a racing tipster for The Scotsman, but results of 130 races on which he gave tips over a randomly selected period of three years show a punter who followed his tips by investing £100 a race, or £13,000 in all would have lost £2,385 or almost 22 per cent of his stakes.

Bookies would normally expect to keep about 20 per cent of stakes on major races, so Salmond’s tips worked out not better than shutting one’s eyes and choosing horses with a pin.

A race-by-race graph shows that at no point from start to finish would a punter following Salmond’s horse selections would have got ahead of the game.

Salmond’s proposed gamble with the Scottish economy has now also been costed with claims that the price tag for separation being crippling, according to research'.

Salmond is on one huge ego trip. He hasn't attracted this much media attention since he resigned as the SNP leader in 2000, and is revelling in his new found fame, posturing and preening like some hideous Simon Cowell. The man is a complete buffoon.

We spent last night in Edinburgh and are tonight in St Andrews and, while I don't pretend to know anything about the politics of it all, I can tell you it is all anyone here is talking about. It is a very interesting week to be in Scotland!

How can you say that? Unless you are privy to some information that doesn't see to be available here in Scotland? All the polls are extremely close, one I saw yesterday less than 1%, with almost all pundits (other than extremists from both sides) saying it's far too close to call.
It's an extremely complex and complicated question and is/will not be decided on purely party political lines.

Yes Katy, tomorrow we will be in the Inverness area, which I suspect might be more Yes influenced given their Highland history.

No Edinburgh rock, but I've seen it everywhere. Haven't been game to try the haggis yet either :-). Otherwise the food has been fabulous.

Yes, going to England in about 10 days. But not to Wales, Paris instead :-). We had 12 nights in Ireland before here

As English, I started out as in favour of Scotland staying within the UK union. But in the last week or so I have changed my mind - I think they should go. They are more trouble than they are worth. And the English are getting pretty fed up with this noisy whinging minority 8% of the UK. Amazingly, they have just been offered yet more bribes by the politicans (at the rest of the UK's expense) to try to persuade the Scots to stay. The English backlash is already starting:
