Is This The Future Of Medical Service In Australia?

We all know that big Tony is besotted by all thing American (the user pays capital of the world), so is this the future of medical services in Australia.

A Perth woman on a year-long trip to the USA was in the wrong place at the wrong time and ended up in the middle of gun fight on a New Orleans street and was shot in the face. She has now been told by her medical insurer that they will not be paying for facial reconstruction surgery

Now if this had happen in Australia no problems as Medicare would cover the bill.

But because it happened in the US, unless her medical insurer has a change of heart , her options are pretty much limied to being disfigured for life, or finding a way to raise the $135,000 she need to have the surgery.

Seems like an insurance problem more than a medical services problem, foreigners arent entitled to free medical care here either. Why did they knock her back? Cant she return to Australia for the surgery?

I was really worried about the travel insurance when we went to Thailand, the more you read about them the more you realise they try and get out of anything they can. My friends mum had a claim denied when she became so ill during a flight they'd had to reroute the plane and drop her off in Indonesia, not sure what that ended up costing them.

From what I can read she's back in Australia now, but the $135000 is for surgery in America. Someone has posted a link to her facebook page about a victims of crime compensation in Louisiana she should be enitiled to. Hopefully they can help her.

Her face doesnt look too bad, the injuries inside her mouth were pretty traumatic though. Probably the fact that its dental work makes it more expensive too.

She's also got an offer from a Perth plastic surgeon to repair the damage free of charge. That was just after it happened in July, wonder what became of that.

Correct and we see that on here on a daily basis, facts seem to be forgotten when it comes to slandering TA

I cant see how the fact her travel insurance will not cover the procedures has anything to do with TA or our medicare system.

Ms Matthews told Daily Mail Australia her insurance policy in emergency was to get the person 'fit to fly', which is why the cosmetic and dental surgeries are not covered.

If she wanted full medical etc she should like all of us who travel taken out the correct insurance policy... SHE didnt....

You seem to have touble coming to grips with teh intention behind my post..

In the US, if you don’t have health insurance and you are suffering an illness which will kill you but is curable, then sorry about that, you die. That is, it is a user paid system, where if you can’t afford to pay you can’t afford to use.

Sadly that’s exactly the same kind of heath service that I see the extreme right want to introduce here.

So the question which my thread poses is, do you want a publically funded health service, and if the answer is yes, what are going to do preserve it. As for me, though traditionally an LNP voter, until such time as they boot Abbott out there is no way they can count on my vote at the next election.

You seem to think that TA will change the health system? Why is that? Are you under the impression that if he said he was that the party would back him? They would and he wouldnt do it... He has never ever said that he wants a USA style health system here

Should I check in with Abbott's office before I plan any travel to o/seas destinations? I plan to try and outrun the bulls in Pamplona next year and was wondering if Abbott would guarantee any hospital cover if I get gored.

We’ll let’s start with the last budget resulting in real cuts to health spending over the forecast period, with an actual expenditure not keeping up with projected inflation.

The “Age of Entitlement” mantra, followed very quickly with “Public healthcare costs are spiralling out of control and need to reined in”.

Followed by a GP co-payment, which even Hocky admits is designed to make people think twice before seeing a doctor, a co-payment of which not a cent is going back in the provision of front line public health care services.

Oh and yes, and the sale of Medicare Private, which is the only check and balance in place to stop health insurance premiums going through the roof.

Do it or you’ll have problems getting Federal Government funding for….

As for the Commonwealth bank fair call. Got that one wrong. Forgot Howard didn’t get in until 1996. Thought it was the year before. But then neither Hawk nor Keating are in my good books as it was they who got this whole privatisation BS started.

I did vote for Howard in 1996 as did Frazer before him. I didn’t vote for him after that because, I have a problem when it comes to politicians who lie.

As for the link provided, I don’t believe I have to be an ardent right winger to be a LNP supporter. All things in moderation will surfice.

That is I simply have a distain for politicians such as Howard and Abbott and Keating to name but three who believe it is Ok to lie to the electorate if they believe it is for the greater good.
