I don't agree that this was tongue-in-cheek. She is making a strong comment on this example of the oppression and subjugation of women. This she has done for ever.

My guess is that Germaine was giving an interview and the question was asked so she answered..... That's all that is required for her comments to be taken out of context and be blown out of proportion for those who have a need to feel outraged on a daily basis.

So how do you suggest she respond to such questions in an interview?

Greer is an interesting academic and writer. If people still seek to interview her why the heck should she shut up and not speak? She's just another woman who is often selectively quoted to get a reaction.
