Princess Charlene of Monaco Expecting Twins

Princess Charlene, the South African wife of Monaco monarch Prince Albert II, is expecting twins at the end of the year, the royal palace has announced.

"The Prince and Princess of Monaco are happy to confirm they are expecting twins... at the end of the year," the palace said in a statement, confirming a report earlier this week in Hello! magazine.

The twins, who will replace Albert's sister Caroline as the next in line to the Monaco throne, will be Charlene's first children and the grandsons or granddaughters of Hollywood superstar Grace Kelly.

Funny how they're all having multiple pregnancies isn't it? Princess Mary of Denmark as well. Fertility treatment? IVF?

Heirs presumptive as of 2014

Caroline, Princess of Hanover, heir presumptive of Albert II, Prince of Monaco

Caroline, Princess of Hanover, is the heir presumptive to the throne of Monaco.

If her brother Albert II, Prince of Monaco, fathers a legitimate child (Albert's wife Princess Charlene is expecting the royal couple's first child by the end of 2014), the child will be heir apparent if male or heir presumptive if female.

So, if the twins are both female, the first born will be heir presumptive. If in the future a son is born to their parents, he will be be heir apparent.

If no sons are born to Albert & Charlene, does the eldest daughter get to stay the heir or do give the title to a male from the extended family?
