I LOVE Paris

I have always been a bit suspect of people who gush about Paris, but now I understand.

Don't get me wrong I'm very keen to get home to my favourite part of Australia, but I really don't want to leave here.

I'll be back (hopefully) in the not too distant future

Paris is my favourite city.

And you are there at the most beautiful time of the year too Lurker.

The first trip overseas I did by myself was to Paris. We arrived at 6 in the morning and took the tube from the Airport to the city. When we emerged out of the tube into the street I was dumbstruck - it was spectacularly beautiful. I will never forget that moment.

I have so many memories of Paris.

I took my son there a few times. When he was little he'd chase the pigeons. I bought him a toy bird from one of the sellers near the Eiffel Tower.

We ate at a different place every night. We had a burger once ... he was impressed to find it was pink in the middle, lol. I introduced him to couscous Algerian style there. He had French onion soup and croque monsieur. And, we had pastries and breads and filled baguettes ...

I love that Paris is so "walkable". We always walked for miles. Lots to see and enjoy, and millions of places to stop for a break, a snack and the occasional beer for me (something about French beer). Although, I also love their wine.

Then there are the shops, the Galeries Lafayette, and the other big one ... oh, the food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Long time since I was there. My distinct memories include:

the view from the Eiffel Tower displaying the white hue of the buildings in the region, the number of building cranes;

watching the round-a-bout traffic at the Arc de Triomphe;

the style and self assurance of the women;

the gutteral sound of the men speaking French.

I spent four days in Paris three years ago, and fell in love with the place. It's such an easy city to get around in. We rented a holiday appartment on the Boulevarde St Germain, about 500 metres from Notre Dame, and travelled everywhere either on foot or on the batobus. a river bus on the Seine. I think the only part of the city we didn't get to was Montmartre.

Enjoy Paris while you can - with the present economic state of France, the scene could soon darken. Hard left Socialist government, rising far right extremist political parties, sky high taxes, high unemployment, rabid anti-business and anti-entrepreneur atmosphere, stubborn adherence to the disastrous single european currency (the euro)... Most of France seems to have escaped to London these days...

Really, Lurker? To quote Diana Dors: "I think Paris is the most over-rated city in the world."

What really surprised me was how many ugly warehouses and run-down areas of Paris there are, that don't make the postcards and the 2nd unit footage in movies. They must use the same two city blocks in every movie.

The people are also really rude, but they are all over France, so that was no surprise.

There are so many more beautiful and romantic cities in Europe: Venice, Vienna, Prague are some of my favourites...

According to you, first Sydney is over rated. And now Paris is too. What gives?

You obviously stayed in some industrial ghetto way (WAY!) out of Paris beyond the ring road of the arrondissiments. And even then way (WAY!) beyond that.

Really? I acted my usual self all lover Europe and they all reciprocated with the same polite friendliness, but then the French attitude never did bother me much 😉
