Just remember one thing. The type of things that happened yesterday happened all the time in the past and will do in the future. The only difference between now and 10 years ago is people watch flightplan, the media report any turn back and blow it out of all proportion into a full scale emergency.

Most are likely to be Pan Pan calls, not emergency calls.

Fire engines and emergency services go out on the runway as a precaution, part of SOP. The media seem to think otherwise.

SOPS's are there for a reason, they work.

The fact is, if Qantas can save a A380 from crashing after a major engine explosion and loss of a lot of the functions, a smell in the cabin is not likely to trouble them that much BUT as a precaution as part of SOP's the checklist says return to nearest airport and land.

A smell in the cabin actually means that the level of fresh air is too low. Id like to see you survive being stuck in a pressurized cam breathing exhaust fumes. The worst thing they did was ban cigarette smoking on aircraft, more fresh air had to be pumped into the cabin ti remove the cigarette smoke. Since the ban a lot less fresh air is pumped in. Aircraft are pressurised and this is achieved by high pressure exhaust gases with a small bleed in of fresh air. No point arriving dead. A smell in the cabin is very serious indeed or would you just try and open a window

I would hope it was exhaust gases, much better than fresh air at 30,000 ft !!!

Unless you wanted a cabin full of frozen corpses !!! LOL

This shyte has been coming for years.......soon as the company decided to have all/most of the maintenance and scheduled checks done outside of Australia.

Hardly funny. Exhaust gases are devoid of oxygen. I for one have never been hanging around at thirty thousand feet long enough to dispute your assumption. But without the entry of air from outside if the aircraft all souls would be lost. Less than best business practice

Being in a pressurised but unheated aircraft at height is bloody cold.

I froze my balls off once, so cold that when we came into land and was told to move I couldn't

Lets not forget most incidences are more to do with the aircraft than the airline.

There will always be unforeseen circumstances no matter how diligent maintenance is due to aircraft design or manufacture.

The A380's are still very new.

The turn around rate for world airlines is approx 1 in 9000

The turn around rate for Qantas is approx 1 in 18,000

Alan Joyce may be yet another "hatchet" man like Sol was. destroying the company so it can be sold off to overseas investors. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what's really going on there

Qantas may have had a rate of 1 in 18000. I'm guessing that unless they had 52000 flights yesterday the rate has just gone out the window
