THE family who lost their four-week-old daughter to whooping cough have revealed the insensitive harassment they have endured at the hands of the anti-vaccination campaigners.

Toni and David McCaffery have broken their silence on the four years of vilification they have endured since baby Dana died in March 2009.

The attacks against the family include anonymous letters, cyber-attacks and heartless, abusive messages telling them to "harden the f ... up".

They have been accused of lying about their daughter's death and being part of a conspiracy to force vaccinations on others.

Australian Vaccination Network (AVN) founder Meryl Dorey even posted her own anti-vaccination information on Dana McCaffery's memorial website.

Ms Dorey also demanded autopsy reports from public health officials the day before the four-week-old baby's funeral on March 13, 2009.

When asked by The Sunday Telegraph to comment on these allegations, Ms Dorey declined, saying she would answer the questions on her own website.

Toni McCaffery said: "The lunacy and the venom directed at us has just been torture - it's been frightening, abhorrent and insensitive in the extreme."

She said she had received three anonymous letters at her home which included pamphlets from the AVN.

The family's campaign to raise awareness of the importance of immunising children has made them targets of harassment, she said.

"They hated us because our child died," Ms McCaffery said. "We were being told you're horrible and you'll kill other people, diminishing what my child went through, that she was weak anyway and it was natural selection."

Didn't watch it.

The anti vax people are either misrepresented or stupid, imo.

The family in the post above have done themselves no favours either, from what I have seen in the media. They have no idea where the baby caught whooping cough. However, I do recall testing that was done in that area, when another baby also had whooping cough and it was either staff or another parent who was a carrier.

Perhaps we need to revert to the days of keeping babies home, away from the possibility of being exposed, for a lot longer.

My eldest 3 were "nursery window" babies and I didn't take them out in public for about 3 months.

cherples......stories such as that are going on by both sides. You think the lro vaccination don't hound the parents of non vaccinated children? The more informed you are the better...and by formed I mean truly informed on all issues by both sides. Testing prior would be my choice.

This results from their existing philosophical position on vaccination, negative experiences with the medical system, and/or religious beliefs. Contact with the medical establishment and doctors often results in feelings of alienation and disenchantment and they tend to prefer the advice of alternative health professionals. They may desire a more trusting relationship with their doctor or nurse, one who would accept their decisions about vaccination. Some studies reveal they may have less accurate knowledge about vaccination than all other groups except ‘acceptors’.

These parents tend to cluster in communities who share certain religious, philosophical or alternative beliefs.

interesting that some societies have little illness and rely on non conventional medicine with a high sucess rate. While others seem to have continued out breaks despite vaccination.....even to the point.

I found it very sad about the young man vaccinated against polio only to bcome so ill with polio. 1 in 20million?

Wow! just wow!

It was the total opposite of being biased if you listened to what the experts were saying. They were incredibly balanced.

I didn't say I think the pro vaccinated parents don't hound other parents, although I doubt there is much of that going on. I commented on an article. The article about parents being attacked by anti vaccer's. That is not acceptable regardless of the excuses you can invent.

Truly informed on both sides. One side is peddling scientific research while the other is peddling old wives tales and myths.

The inclusion of the man who contracted polio from the polio vaccine (and probably much more, I only saw a couple of snippets) demonstrates quite nicely that it wasn't biased.

Why do you say it was biased? Because they didn't air and take seriously the views of the people involved in groups such as the Australian Vaccination Network?

You need to elaborate your allegations. Not just say "Oh of course you can't see why it was biased". It's illustrative of the (lack of) logic and level of critical thinking that is shared by the anti vaccination types.

So would that not be genetic?

The connection between vaccine and autism has been found to be untrue. The research was false.

several children who contracted illnesses had immune problems one a missing spleen. The debate re vaccine and autism is on going with good indication that vaccines may trigger itin SOME. Some are having issues following the newish cervical cancer vaccine......SOME not all. Same as SOME vaccinated are not immune at all. what works for one may not work for another. Not so long ago alternative medicine was thought to be hog wash but is now readily accepted by the same medical experts 🙂 Freedom to chose is the issue.
