Yes, they still called it the 396 for two reasons, One, cars under a certain size couldn't have more than 400cu, two, the 396 was such a popular and reputable selling point with people, (Chevy Rat fans) but it was at some point increased to 402cu.

I really like those Novas, 68 - 72... I'm more into small blocks (SBC) so a that Nova with a 350hp 350cu, and a 4 speed manual would have me drooling. I studyed up on that COPO, but most became Yenkos, I think two survives as COPOs. I like the plain looking better, more of a better sleeper. Much more fun when folks don't know what you have there until they see what it can do.

Does anyone have an opinion about the difference in quality between a Suzuki Swift and a Corolla hatch?

I am aware of the difference in engine capacity, the difference in the wheel base which would give better stability, and the price difference. The dashbboard gadgetry is irrelevant.

Would the Corolla be a better car? By much?

Its actually not bad along a freeway and surprsingly comfortable, not so great on steep hills and not enough guts to overtake unless you have a fair bit of room.

I just want something with a bit more leg and boot space and a bit more guts up a hill. I have a 4wd as well so I dont want anything too big, just something to run around in that is cheap.

I think they are both reliable.

Also google the exact models you are looking for to see if either have a design issue.

I have the Suzuki Swift and I've been really happy with it. I've never driven a Carolla so I can't really help with a comparison.

It's great for every day getting around but as Punch drunk said it's not the best for getting up steep hills. It's ok as long as you don't have impatient drivers behind you 😄

The boot space is fairly small compared to my old Astra but what I do like about it is the vision because it doesn't seem to have blind spots and also it feels solid.

Apparently it's the car you get when you really wanted a Mini and couldn't afford one.

i think a late - to new model quailty vehicle can still be loved

I don't know if a car should be loved, maybe liked really well. But lets save love for people, they need it more than cars do.
