Abbott's Advantage As Showdown Looms

Tony Abbott enters this leadership crisis in a stronger position than those who would replace him for one simple reason: he has a plan to hold his job and they don't have a plan to snatch it. Not yet, anyway.

Malcolm Turnbull is the most viable candidate standing in the wings. The polls say it and the colleagues know it. But he isn't campaigning, not actively anyway.

Julie Bishop is the other option, but also the bigger risk, and she isn't campaigning either. She said so on Tuesday.

Abbott, on the other hand, is campaigning. He has already played his key card, claiming he has legitimacy of the people's vote just 17 months ago, warning that he will have to be blasted out and reminding colleagues that disunity is death, whoever is in charge. It's a potent message.

Sooner he is gone the better. Although if he stays as PM it will mean LNP will be out on their ear next election anyway.. he has negatively targeted too many groups of people, that won't vote for him .

He's not a Lawyer and he's not an accountant. He's a Firefighter and a Lifesaver.

Is that supposed to make people feel better about him? Seriously, he is the Prime Minister not a local small business owner.

"I've always supported Tony Abbott. My support for him has been based on his performance, his courage, his capacity to make the right calls for the country in opposition and in government," he told Sky News.

"But that support ongoing is not unconditional.

"It's based on being able to grapple with the issues we face at the moment, which appear to have impacted on our standing in the polls."

10 Coalition MPs would support spill motion

The ABC has phoned dozens of Coalition MPs and can identify 10 who would support a spill motion, while another 20 could be described as highly disaffected or harbouring deep concerns.

That's all he has to do. The Lefities just want to see him fail the way their champions failed. It would satisfy their appetite for revenge.

Thing is, if he was ousted, there would be no one who could take on the mess Australia is currently in, and not fail in a similar way.
The Australian voter doesn't have the stomach for more political turmoil and will want to stick with the devil they know.

I find it quite incredible how the media try to create a crisis where there is none. The Libs are not as stupid as the Lefties, and let the media whip up a storm.

pre-election. I assumed that he was in the SLSC before he stood for election, haven't looked anywhere to find out.

Various Libs were on ABC every day stirring the pot about Gillard.

I still don't get the last paragraph at the end of the opening post, as far as PM credentials go.

He would probably have more 'smarts' if he was an accountant ( esp. re economics) or a lawyer. Not an active firefighter or livesaver so not relevant anyway.

If according to the article quoted Abbott has a (single) Advantage, that doesn't negate all the disadvantages he has now.

All the msm media outlets (right wing and left) are reporting facts as they become available, not stirring the pot. It is their job to keep public informed.

Where do you think they are getting their info from icy? Disgruntled LNP MP's and backbenchers that's where.
