Because with the laws the way they are it is easier to have 3 mistresses and all your assets "out of reach"

than 3 wives, any of which can clean you out

You get the same benefits without the cost !

We are monogamous.

Ever since we can remember men have fought over one woman.

I don't think it is in our genetics, love for one is too strong.

Perhaps over n beyond using intellectual thought we are able to manage it and ignore our instinct if need be or want.

Hmmm I don't know about that. With the trend of men fathering children to multiple women and women doing the reverse, I think the scattering and receiving of seed ad hoc is very much natural to human nature.

I don't know the absolute answer to that but given the number of methods available to avoid pregnancy you gotta wonder.

I think nature maybe a stronger force than we are always aware.

In the distant past child needed 2 parents to survive, at least for few years. Woman alone could hardly go hunting with an infant or 2 in her arms. So, one woman and one man would have usually baby every 2 years. It would be hard for man to provide for 2 families, until the society became more developed, and man did not have to personally do all the work.

I do not have a problem with what ever structure of family people choose; their lives, their choice.

Some birds pair for life. However genetic test show that some species, are quite promiscuous, and many babies in one nest are fathered by different male. Which is good for maintaining diversity of the species, while staying with one partner assures welfare of the babies.

I dont either, it is an interesting discussion.

I only know about Africa and other places because friends go there a lot hunting and they always come back with photos of such and such tracker with his 2, 3 wives etc.

Don't forget it is practised in Australia still in Aboriginal culture.
A relative of a friend of mine has 3 wives and kids by all of them.

He sowed his seed far and wide !!!

Yes, and if man had 3 wives and each had number of kids, he would have to hunt enough for all of them.

This guy can hunt, and shoot, in fact he is damn good at both.

Problem is, welfare, a supermarket and Fray Bentos pies are far easier.

Regarding the original question.......

Obviously for some people in some situations it works , while for others it would be unthinkable. I say let each of us tread the path that works best for us and most importantly for the children of the union/s

I depends how distant the distant past is..... if it was caveman times they lived in tribes didn't they? So everyone would provide for each other. It's probably the same in some other tribes now. Interesting idea to explore.
