An interference engine is a type of 4-stroke internal combustion piston engine in which one or more valves in the fully open position extends into any area that thepiston may travel into. By contrast, a non-interference engine is one where the piston does not travel into any area into which the valves open

Does anyone know if a Mazda Eunos 30X engine V6 (K8) engine is interference or non-interference?

ie if a Timing Belt fails, will the pistons and valves collide?

They are reputed to be noninterference.

According to Motoring.com.au used car advice and I quote, 'Cam Belt is important maintenance as valves and pistons can collide if it breaks whilst being revved. Water pump driven by cam belt at 120,000 km for repeat labour bill so best replaced at each belt change".

I hope their advice is better than their grammar, but seems to answer your question.

You would be better off asking on a Madza forum.

I can tell you that the 1984 Telstar / mazda 626 2L were not damaged when a cam belt broke while running.

OK, thanks all. Looks like it's a non-interference so, in theory, the pistons and/or valves should be OK.
