The Pulitzer Prize winning image shows a girl who was exhausted and taking a break while on her way to a feeding center. Kevin Carter took about 20 minutes to get the shot of the vulture and the baby in focus without scaring off the vulture. In that time, Kevin Carter was moved so much at what had transpired that he later took his own life.

The photograph was sold to The New York Times where it appeared for the first time on March 26, 1993 as ‘metaphor for Africa’s despair’.

i should've posted the whole story:

Carter reported taking the picture, because it was his "job title", and living. He was told not to touch the children for fear of transmitting disease. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Carter

And photographers should not insert themselves into the photo or environment. if they do it once, why not every time ?

Hence photos of disasters when some might say they should help.

Nothing would have stopped me from scooping up that child (BTW it was not a baby) and taking him/her to safety.

You aren't a professional photographer.

And as said above, if you insert yourself by picking up the kid,
bearing in mind the kids parent is nearby, then you might compound
the problem through disease.

wow...now i regret posting the photo.

seems the powerful message was lost here -

didnt think it was possible.

the photographer was there accompanying the UN.

he was not there alone...he was told not to

touch the children..the vulture did not hurt

the child. he chased it away. (the child was a girl)

He was told not to touch the kids for a very valid reason,
the kids health and safety.

Would you want to be responsible for giving them a disease ?

That photo would have far more effect world wide than picking up the kid.

And professional photographers get criticised for getting involved,
inserting themselves into the scene.

Sorry I agree with Polks, I am a mother and I could not bare this, dont touch the kid then but bring her some food.

I would perfer to see a photo of some one feeding that child.

Gee, I wonder what would have happened in Rwanda if the Australians, who I know were there, walked past sick and injured children.

I wonder if they stopped and took photos.
