Calls For Auspost Boss To Get Sack

As Australia Post faces its first full-year loss in 30 years, there are calls for its chief executive Ahmed Fahour to stand down.

This comes as the Abbott government is expected to announce a reform package – within weeks – designed to help arrest the falling financial performance of Australia Post, which on Monday announced a 56 per cent drop in half-yearly profit.

The nation’s postal service recorded a first-half profit of just $98 million, with the dive driven by mounting losses of $151 million in its letters business.

“We’re at a crisis point,” Mr Fahour told Fairfax Radio.

With the proposed reforms, Australians could face exorbitant postal costs and slower mail.

Mr Fahour, whose annual salary is $4.8 million, says this would counter the financial issues.

The US Postmaster General’s wage is a mere $511,000.

Printing Industries Association of Australia chief executive Bill Healey, who is part of the industry union, doubts Mr Fahour’s ability as Australia Post’s top dog.

“I think you have to question whether a banker who has been second in charge at major bank, is the best person for the job at a customer and logistics service,” Mr Healey told The New Daily.

“It’s not up to us as a group to question when the government appoints these positions – but it may be time for someone with a different approach and a different background to try and take charge.”

Meanwhile, Australian senators this week criticised Mr Fahour’s company’s handling of stakeholder consultation as it undergoes major restructuring in the Senate estimates.

I don't think you understand the main issues here. Letter rate postage costs are not connected to parcel rate postage costs.

Letters - declining numbers of letters being sent (due to electronic mail - emails). Letter mail delivery service, by the posties (5 days a week) is costing more and income from postage stamps is decreasing sharpy = LOSS

Parcels - increasing number onilne parcels being sent - = Good PROFIT for AP which is increasing. AP is intending to increase the parcel delivery service, with maybe Sat deliveries as well as Mon-Fri. Parcel delivery persons on contracts.

Most online retailers/ sellers send parcels at parcel rates (some eBay sellers use letter rates for light, thin items).

Dont often post on politcal threads-----but while im having a go---

Did i read to save tax -he passed on some of his salary to a Mosque.

I reckon the Salvos or other charities would have been more deserving

and the money spread around better.........................................................Richo.

It is around what CEO's earn for salaries in Australia. Qantas CEO, highest amount for one year was $5m.

Aust salaires are not comparable with US salaries.

A person working in a cafe in US would be lucky to get $6 ph in Australian same job would get $22-$30 (depending on day of week).

That's an old chestnut.

His choice who he donates his own salary to. It was donated to the Islamic Museum of Australia not a mosque.

The museum is set up as a charity.

What is wrong with that? You are always going on that there is nothing wrong with minimising tax as long as it is done within the law.

Mr Fahour said he and his family had been able to make a “substantial contribution’’ to several not-for-profit organisations in recent years.

“Earlier this year, I announced that my family had contributed $4 million to the Islamic Museum. We have also made contributions to a number of other community causes such as schools, sporting clubs and the arts,’’ he said

The PM of NZ donates most (if not all) of his PM's salary to charity. (He doesn't need it, self made multi millionaire).

If you (or me) had a substantial amount of money to donate, wouldn't you want to choose who it went to?

I really don't see how anyone has the right to criticise ( or anyone else's business) who a person chooses to donate large amounts of money to. He/his family have already donated large amounts to other groups as well.

The fact that they do donate large amounts of their earnings deserves KUDOS.

The main problem with Aust Post ( and other postal services around the world) is the sharp and ever decreasing decline in the number of letters sent. (due to email,scanned docs sent by email etc.)

AP need Govt approval to change things.

When a tracked parcel goes awol and never delivered to recipient, because parcel wasn't scanned at a point on its journey, AP says - too bad, nothing we can do. Sender pays extra for tracking they should get tracking!
