Marie Bashir Lashes Out At Farming To Mining

Former NSW governor Marie Bashir says the destruction of fertile Australian farmland for mining is a "crisis" that must stop, adding: "I have never been so emphatic or political in my life".

It is the first time Dame Marie has spoken out against mining after 13 years in the traditionally apolitical role of NSW governor. The beloved dame, who retired late last year, also said her fears about foreign ownership of Australian land bring out her "nasty side".

The conflict between faming and mining, including coal seam gas, has become a defining election issue in regional NSW, and may heavily sway results in seats on the north coast and in western NSW.

Speaking at an International Women's Day event in Sydney on Sunday, Dame Marie said Australia was in the incredible position of being able to "help to feed the world".

Dame Marie said the situation was "a clarion call" to women, adding "I couldn't be more passionate about a cause than this one. We must do something to protect our food-producing land".

Dame Marie, the daughter of Lebanese immigrants who grew up in Narrandera in western NSW, said women could make a difference "by lobbying the men, whether they live under the same roof or are in the same parliament".

"We've all got to take this message to all whom we know. This is, in a sense, a crisis, disguised though it is," she said.

Independent candidates are trying to capitalise on concern over coal and coal seam gas mining in regional Nationals-held seats such as Tamworth and Barwon.

Farmers on the Liverpool Plains were angered in January when planning authorities approved the $1.2 billion Shenhua Watermark open-cut coal mine in the farming region.

I can think of many of things that destroy or limit productive harming land than mines.

It can't be that much land, considering how big Aus is.

It's not the point of how much land, Vic, it's point of being in the most fertile farming land and near water catchment areas.

Well, their is always something that crops up, be it Sacred site or a new, undiscovered frog or lizard that is extremely rare LOL

I am not totally for or against this mine.

Good on Marie Bashir for speaking out on CSG mining (destroying communities in QLD, NSW and across the globe)

Locally to me - The Illawarra

CSG exploration licences cover most of the Illawarra, and more applications have been lodged. 4 pilot wells have been drilled, one in Darkes Forest and 3 in conjunction with Metropolitan Colliery.

16 exploration wells in the Northern Illawarra have also been granted development consent - all in and around drinking water catchments. - though this consent is currently invalid.

Sustained opposition from the local community, delayed drilling past projet expiry dates, and the owners failed to lodge a renewal application on time.

What are some of the concerns?

Threats to water

Health impacts

Leaking methane

Fire Hazards

Earthquakes

Big industrial footprint

The previous state govt paved the way for CSG expansion. Unfortunately the current govt has not acted decisively to redress this despite pre-election promises and evidenced risks. As as result, exploration licences now cover 25% of NSW and most of the Illawarra.

Campaign for:

A freeze on CSG exploration and mining

A royal commission into impacts of CSG development

A ban on fracking

A ban on CSG development in drinking water catchments.

vicr, I often agree with you, bu this time you are out of order.

Many people do have jobs providing the nation with food and exporting thir product. How many jobs do you think would be lost if mining took over what is now prime agricultural land? Besides, the health risks to the enviroment and the poisoning of drinking water.

Get your facts right.

And no, I am not living in one of those areas, but I am concerned about the future of our country.
