Gardening advice please

I moved here because there was no gardening to do, but I have an empty space on the patio and have bought a few pots.

They are plastic, 450 x 18. I have given away all my gardening books, and would like to put some perennials in them. I don't want to fiddle about with annuals. Sub-tropics, afternoon sun.

I have herbs in terracotta pots.

Anybody have any suggestions? TIA

Patio gardens is a very hostile environment at times. I suggest you go for big succulents like Flapjacks or Agave Attentuata.

The succulent suggestion is good. Do you like them? Would they grow OK where you are?

I usually plant annuals in pots, so not much help with perennials. Will watch this thread for others suggestions.

Succulents come in such interesting varieties.

Lavenders are good for potted gardens too.

I put a dwarf lavender (suitable for pots) in a pot a few months ago, first time I have tried in a pot.. It struggles to survive. There are a couple in the garden that grow like weeds.

The weather here has been very humid and wet (not usual) for months so that may have affected it. The petunia's in pots didn't do well either and they usually do.

Geraniums seem to be the thing lately and there are some lovely colours. Patio roses. Bromliads (sp). Nasturtiams are nice and bright and don't go wild in pots like they do in the ground. Trim them if they do.

May I suggest some Geraniums, Pelargoniums and Ivy Geraniums. Pelargoniums have flowers similar to Azaleas. All Geranium species flower throughout the year until thy are trimmed at the end of February. They come in such a great variety of colours and are easy to take care of once the plant is established. They grow well in almost any soil and are happy to just get some rain.

Lavender and Rosemary grow well in pots, so do all succulents. (some have lovely flowers once a year.)

Erigeron (English Daisy) will grow anywhere and flower all year. Careful though, it scatters its seed far and wide and grows in concrete cracks, but never needs attention. So does my English Sedum (a succulent) spreads along the concrete and changes colour with the season from green to reddish brown. Flowers once a year with very pretty star like flowers.

Those are good suggestions, Sandy. Pots not big enough for bromeliads, and afternoon sun is too hot. But I love them.

Erica, I was thinking about geraniums or pelargoniums because they are fairly hardy. I have rosemary in a herb pot (for cooking). Erigeron is nice too, but fairly small. It is a pretty ground cover. Thank you for your suggestions.

It's hard to think of the pretty perennials in pots as most I have tried will be lovely but for one season only. Some plants will reseed themselves and grow again next year, such as my Cosmos.

One I also have which has hung around for a few years is convolvulous mauritanicas. This is a google photo and they call it convolvulous sabatia but it looks like mine, (which isn't flowering at the moment).

It's a perrenial trailing plant which is good in pots.

That is a pretty flowering plant j*oono.

Some of the OP shops near me, have cuttings of geraniums and other plants (from their volunteer's gardens). They have been planted in small pots but haven't grown much since placed in the pot. They price them at around $6 though, which is a bit steep imo.
