We have a big problem with them eating the roses............have tried everything known to man to get rid of them, nothing works, no good trapping them, as they come back or another family of them move in.......

Chop up about six garlic cloves and a bown onion, boil it with one Litre of water for about 5 to ten minutes. Let it cool, strain and mix a tablespoon of ground chillie in the liquid. Fill a spray bottle and spray the plants.

I had a row of standard roses in front of my verandha. The possums used to feast on all the half open rosebuds. It was a horrenduous thought to me to spray my lovely smelling roses with garlic, but at least I could enjoy the beauty of my flowers.

After I used this spray, the possums soon left my plants alone.

Erica

I read somewhere that they do not like mint. So, I bought 3 pots of mint, planted them in big pots and placed them next to my roses and nothing ate them. However, my daughter's mint gets eaten together with everything else on her veranda. 😞 Maybe it depends on how desperate the possums are; in my place with large garden there are other things they can eat, in my daughter's place in the inner city suburb with heaps of flats, the possums are starving.

maybe try to feed them some apples, which they love and they may leave your roses alone?

Their predators are The Powerful Owl. They are found all along the East coast

You need a large plastic owl to scare them off.

They used to be available at National Geographic Stores.

I think some gardening centres have them also

If you get one you should change it's position daily

Possums should go elsewhere to eat.

https://www.google.com.au/search?q=powerful+owl&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=v_45VcmBDJe58gXc1oG4DA&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1043&bih=497

Or just play this at full volume at night hahahahahaha

A possum killed one of my cats. She was sleeping on the verandha on a hot summers night when I heard a great commotion, ran outside to see the possum killing my lovely little cat. There was nothing I could do to save her. That nasty possum jumped on to the blustrade and kept hissing and barking at me. Possums look cute, but can be very dangerous and nasty.

Talking about moth balls. Our house was the only one in the street that was made of weatherboard and built on a slope, so we had some empty space underneath. Just the ideal place for cats to gather at mating times and keep the whole family awake all night with their catervaulting crys.

I bought a box of mothballs and threw them under the house. No more cat concerts after that.

Wonder if it would work on possums?

Erica

I'[m sorry you lost your little cat that way, how horrible, but I have also seen possums mutilated by cats too. One was badly wounded and I took her to the vet to euthanise, but they found a baby in her pouch and said the baby would be saved. I don't consider them nasty, here where I live in a busy suburb with few gardens they are starving. They fight to survive. I feel mean wanting to deter them but they can eat the rest of my garden, just not the succulent patch.

I will try your suggestion of the garlic spray, and I've heard that camphor can also be a good repellent.

We tried the garlic spray, worked for awhile, then it didnt, as I said we have tried everything to stop them nothing worked...........OH put wire up and around some of the roses, that worked to a degree, also covering them with an old sheet, but they managed to get under that............so nothing really works, long term.

Dont buy one of those ommitor things that are suppose to give the possums a small shock, cost the earth and did nothing at all, a total waste of money..........
