Indonesia approves plan to buy 1 million hectares of Australian grazing land

Indonesia has moved to solve its beef supply problems by approving a plan to buy one million hectares of Australian farmland, a plot four times the size of the ACT.

Beef prices in Indonesia have hit record prices over the past year as local production fails to keep pace with domestic demand.

The country's so-called self-sufficiency policy has been blamed because it restricted imports from Australia and elsewhere.

To lower prices Indonesia has eased some restrictions until the end of 2013, but the government has now come up with a more permanent solution.

Once the Indonesians decide on an appropriate piece of land, Australia's Foreign Investment Review Board would have to rule on whether a sale could go ahead.

s a result the purchase of Australian land would allow Indonesia to say it is still achieving self-sufficiency by providing its own beef, even though it is grown offshore.

While Australian cattle farmers would argue there is a potential supply of Australian cattle that could be used to meet demand by lifting quotas permanently, that would also have the Indonesian government "losing face" by seeming to back down on the policy.

Some of the best farms that have been with the same family for years in NZ has been sold to the Chinese, Breaks my heart to see this in NZ and Australia, we are selling our souls 😞

The government should buy the farms and lease them to overseas interests instead of selling them outright.

what they want to do is increase the herd, the cattle won't be grazing, they will be permanently housed in barns.

while our govt's are consistantly going for the 'quick buck"by selling us out to foreign investors, in the long term they are killing our export market. We simply won't have one

Indonesia's government has approved a plan to buy 1 million hectares of cattle farmland in the north to secure cheaper imports.

Indonesia wants to be self-sufficient in food production but does not have the land for breeding cattle locally.

Under the plan, the cattle would be bred in Australia and transported to local feedlots.

The NT Cattlemen's Association says producers in the Territory are not in a position to argue with the proposal and some struggling producers may benefit

Spokesman Luke Bowen says it is a good opportunity for the region.

"I think we have to be very open-minded about foreign investment," he said.

"It's been a part of the landscape ... our history has shown us it's been good for northern Australia ... infrastructure, it stays behind."

The agribusiness PT Rajawali Nusantara Indonesia had planned on acquiring stakes in cattle stations capable of holding up to half a million head, The Jakarta Post reports.

All proposals from state-owned enterprises are automatically scrutinised by the Foreign Investment Review Board, but the federal government has said it's open to the idea of Indonesia buying Australian land.

As its middle class swells and beef demand grows, Indonesia has sought large stakes in established pastoral operations in northern Australia to secure its own supply.

The same is happening in UK. There was a very interesting program on the ABC last night at 9.30pm about how the super rich o/s investors are buying land, and as the cost of real estate is rising much faster than income, ordinary people are not any longer afford to buy.

the first article from your OP is from 2013 and your second article from 2014 is saying that Indonesia is shelving the idea, ( not going ahead with it) due to the high US dollar and permit costs however our govt is all for them going ahead with buying land

jmho but I thnk it is China we need to be more concerned about as they already have purchased large swathes of farm land. The latest being 2 large farms next door to each other near Bendigo

I think it's crazy because all we are doing is cutting out our own farmers ,

According to the Foreign Investment Review Board:

The majority of foreign investment is centred on Melbourne and Sydney
Between July in 2013, and March in 2014, $24.8 billion worth of foreign investment has been approved.
The above sum is 44% higher than the $17.2 billion between 2012 and 2013.
Between July 2013 and March 2014, the FIRB approved the purchase of 5755 existing properties.

That's going to hurt Aus in the long run as most will be rental properties in those cities.

As for farm land,(we wont have enough to support ourselves in the long run and may end up having to buy

from "unsafe" countries),

so the bottom line is, they couldn't afford to do it, so it has absolutely nothing to do with the 600 million in aid that we give them anyway

not that I agree with them buying any land here
