AFP to break silence over Bali Nine

SOME believe their case is closed while others say they have blood on their hands, but for the first time we will hear the Australian Federal Police’s side of the story when it comes to the investigation into the Bali Nine.

The agency is set to break its silence over its role in the arrests of the drug smugglers in Indonesia, which ultimately led tot he execution of ringleaders Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran last week.

If the AFP failed to act would it be guilty of concealing a crime? Given our laws allow 16-year-olds to leave home and give the finger to various agencies and parents how on earth could the AFP say to Scot 'brainless' Rush: "NO, you're not leaving Australia."

They have no problem stopping people leaving Australia if they believe they are going to Syria.

Not if they arrested them on arrival to Australia. They often watch people and only act when they decide it is the best time.

The crime had not been committed when the AFP informed the Indonesians.

How so?

I don't think the family/lawyer of Rush lied about the contact but at the same time I don't think there is anything the AFP could have done to stop these young people travelling to Indonesia.

Very informative press conference. Interesting that they had the officer that made the decision to involve the Indonesian police in the investigation. The actual story is vastly different to what the media have tried to spin it into.

4100 deaths per year from heroin and opiates 😞 I must live under a rock, I didnt think it would be anywhere near that many.

How I heard it was that they said he had lied.

He certainly did not tell the truth on Laws this morning.

I think the person that passed on that information was under the impression it was the AFP's whole case or something. It actually had no real bearing on the outcome.

If you cant keep your own child from leaving the country to smuggle drugs, what did they think they AFP was going to do with a tip off but no evidence.

It's very instuctive to consider preventing a person leaving Australia when people have the right to do as they wish:

When does the law say I am old enough to leave home?

Generally your parents are your legal guardians and it is expected that you will live with your family until you turn 18. However, there is no law in Queensland which says you must stay at home until you are 18.

Once you are 16 you will normally not be forced to return home by the authorities (the police, the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services, or the Children's Court as long as you have a safe place to go and you can support yourself financially.

The fact that a person has a right to forge a future for him or her self at age 16 independently and beyond parental control yet Mr Rush wanted the AFP to step in and prevent Scott Rush (aged about 20) from leaving Australia based on a mere hunch.

I watched the press conference................... nothing I heard told me that the AFP had any need to inform Indonesia of a crime that "might" take place.

It seems they are all happy with the decision they made.

they had information that a crime was going to happen - they were right.

Would you not want police from another country to pass on information of crimes about to take place here?

The crime would have been entering another country with the drugs.

However, where did I say that I wouldn't want that to happen?

i asked the question as you seem to think it wrong that our police informed another country of a crime about to be committed, there was no 'might' about it - they committed a crime.

Why is it so many people look to blame others when the only ones to blame are the ones doing the crime?

The way I see it the AFP are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Imagine the outcry if they had let the drugs into the country and our taxpayers had to foot the bill for the courtcase and prison stay.

I think the persons who committed the crime are to blame for their own predicament.
My comments are related to the statements made by the AFP. They couldn't detain Scott Rush for what he "might do"
