Lemon or Lime Tree, and what type

I'm planning to buy a lemon or Lime tree as a house warming present.

Any suggestion which most people prefer and also what type of lemons. There's so many different types. What's one that's easy to look after and produces heaps?

there are heaps of hybrids n stuff but the fancier the more water and tlc they need.

yes they do.

but i rather have a tree that actually makes some fruits than a fancy variety that never fruits cos its too frikkin dry and hot here.

they were popular many years ago for a darn good reason. nowadays its not pretty enough a fruit.

i know you like to salivate over women unachievable to you. go ahead and do the same buying a tree. get a fancy variety that will never fruit or which you will have to water every day (with rain water of course cos citrus trees dont like tap water).

i have googled alot too.depending on the pages they say very different things.

i think it comes down to chosing something suited to the climate.

living in SA means that i need something tough. the tougher the better. the juiciest fruits are worth nothing if the tree never sets fruit cos its unhappy cos its too hot or/and dry.

they will sell you ANYTHING in bunnings in order to make money.

they sold me a turkish brown fig that is supposed to make fruits twice a year.

not happening.

they sold elder trees in bunning with a label saying 'pick and eat' .

elderberries are poisonous when not boiled (into jam). i know. i ate them raw when i was a child. never been so sick in my life.

it comes down to a choice.

if you breed things you need to select what you breed for.

the colour, taste, hardiness but you cant have it all.

if you chose a superior taste you need to be prepared to work for it (really hard work, getting the right soil, only using rain water, fertilise etc.) or you go for the easy robust thing.

its your choice.

that is right. it might be easier though to start with a bush lemon and then when he is confident and the tree strong graft onto it fancy lemons, limes, mandarines, oranges etc.

I think lemons are the go

Much more versatile unless you are into Thai food

There is a new dwarf lemon tree around now

It is a prolific fruiter and Hardy and can be grown in a large pot

Or half barrel which is a great addition to the aesthetics of your

Garden

I have a lemon and a lime. The lemon is 40 years old, and the fruit reflects that now. 😞 It is huge and shady though.

The lime is around 5 years, has loads of fruit. Large, juicy and without much pith. I dont know what variety it is because it was a gift. The lemon tree is spine free, which is good if you have kids running around.

If you have room it would be good to have both

They are nice looking trees

Although a full grown lemon tree needs a lot of space

Lemon butter

Lemon mirangue pie

Lemonade

Lemon on your pancakes

Lemon chicken

The list is endless

I never buy limes unless it's for a certain recipe

But I always have lemons in the house

And I don't have a tree

Nothing gets ontop of a cold in the early stages than a hot

Lemon drink

Meyer lemon - can be bought as dwarf - sweeter than a normal lemon, and

has no thorns.

Lemonade tree - cross between orange and lemon

Both can be grown in tubs

I have a dwarf Meyer lemon in a pot. The poor baby. It is only one year old and I had to stake it because the lemons were pulling it over. Even though the tree is dwarf size the lemons are full size.

I'm hoping that once the fruit are gone then the tree can put it's energy into itself and grow a bit. The lemons are beautiful and juicy.

Actually I noticed a lemon tree near me just the other day

It was a very large mature tree

Clever owner had cut off all the lower foliage at about 5 feet

And likewise the top at around 8 feet

Looked amazing

And what remained was a giant topiary full of lemons

Made me wish I had a lemon tree

Just so I could copy it
