Bardot Slams Aus Cat Cull

French actress Brigitte Bardot has condemned an Australian plan to cull two million feral cats, blamed for wreaking havoc on native animals, to stop them further harming vanishing populations.

Feral cats have been identified as the main culprit behind Australia's high rate of mammal extinction, with more than 10 percent of species wiped out since Europeans settled here two centuries ago.

Environment Minister Greg Hunt has said the advice he has received is that the cats number 20 million across the country and devour countless native animals every night."They are tsunamis of violence and death for Australia's native species," he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation last week.

Hunt said a target of eradicating two million feral cats had been set for 2020, in addition to creating feral-free enclosures to aid the recovery of birds and mammals among other measures.

The government has stressed the eradication of cats will be carried out humanely, but Bardot urged the government to reconsider the plan which she said was "appalling" to the international community.

"This animal genocide is inhumane and ridiculous. In addition to being cruel, killing these cats is absolutely useless since the rest of them will keep breeding," she said in the English translation of the open letter to Hunt.

Everybody knows I love cats, but I'm realistic enough to understand the damage feral cats are doing to our native animals. There needs to be a cull.

How does she suggest we bring the numbers down otherwise?

I've seen several posts on FB urging people to declare their outrage, sign petitions etc. I'm a cat lover too, but I'm also a lover of our own Australian fauna and while it's not the cats' fault they've been allowed to go feral, they just don't belong in the bush and need to be eradicted.

They can do more damage than good... and so can the feral cats!

I got bit on my hand by a feral cat once..... it actually sunk 2 teeth straight through the muscle in my hand at the thumb.
Hurt like a MF.

These *got no-idea* do gooders havent got a clue half the time. Quarter of the time. Zero clue!

we need to get rid of feral cats, wild dogs (not dingos), rabbits and (to a lesser extent perhaps) camels but certainly cane toads. If someone can come up with an idea to eradicate them all it would be worth millions if not billions of $.

This really **bleep** me off , she is commenting on something she knows diddly squat about , she should crawl back under her rock and shut up before she does serious damage to a programme designed to save hundreds of Australian species from extinction, the cat is not under threat of extinction by this well researched programme. Half the problem is that too many view the wildlife as pests equal to cats. These same morons don't believe in desexing or keeping their cats inside.

Since I've had facebook cat I've noticed a cat pee smell on the door step when I get home in the past few days. She doesn't get outside yet but sits in the window and has attracted a few visitors.

Bardot means well but needs educating about the problem and the drop kicks who view desexing as a waste of money and think pets should be shut outside.

As I have said before it is not just cats that are a pest, I have seen dogs kill birds.

In New Zealand our own Bird the Kiwi are being killed by dogs all the times.

People go into the bush and just let their dogs go with out leads.
