Anger erupts after magazine uses white girl to model Afro hair

A fashion magazine has come under fire for using a white skinned girl to model an Afro.

The August issue of Allure uses Marissa Neitling from TNT’s The Last Ship in the article called “You (Yes, You) Can Have An Afro.”

Readers reacted with anger on social media to the article saying that the article was a 'missed opportunity' to represent the black community.

Back in the day I had a big blonde Afro. I'd rolled my hair up in perm rollers, lol.

It's nothing more than a tempest in a teacup. I wonder what the racial demographics of Allure magazine are.......I mean, Soldier of Fortune isn't going to use a Vietnamese dude in black pajamas and a conical hat as a cover guy......they cater to big white guys with big guns and small p*****es......

I would say it is extremely racist to say only one race could or should wear any particular hair style.

Surely a definition of racism is where someone is excluded from something solely on the basis of race.

If the magazine never uses black girls to model anything at all, then that would earn a question mark.

But if models of varying backgrounds are used, then the fact the woman with an afro happened to be white is neither here nor there.

I think that you will find that the story isn't quite so simple.

The magazine were stupid enough to run some 'background' with this photo referencing black culture and suggested that by getting an afro all women could involve themselves in this culture. But they failed to mention the history of the afro despite the fact that the story was about 70's hairstyles and the 70's were a great time of freedom for african american women and the afro was the symbol of this.

Most of the comments were about these aspects.

This para is from a fashion article about cultural appropriation and I thought I would copy/paste it as it also applies to this:

There's no problem with borrowing hairstyles from other cultures. The issue lies in the dismissal of history and context. It lies in repackaging a style as “chic” and a “new trend” when worn by white women, without any credit to the culture it was taken from — by either the stylist who created it or the editors reporting on it. This is where the distinction between celebrating a culture and appropriating it becomes fuzzy.
