Can anyone tell me how to pot bromiliads. I can only find info on pups ect. Do they like sun or shade? ,I found one article that said not to use potting soil so im thinking of half each sandy dirt and pine bark .

I got a stack of very pretty ones with a red stalk and purple beads up it ,I have never been real interested in them but these were in a recycling bin and they did look interesting .

bromeliads are easy to grow. They love shade and well drained soil. I have mine in and orchid mix which is chunky bark just with a bit of potting mix added.

Apart from the excellent links given above Gardening Australia (I think it's called) on Ch2 did a whole segment last week on bromeliads, very interesting, and lovely plants. You would probably catch it on Iview.

Ok thanks,will try and see that gardening Aust piece . I will try them with potting mix and bark chips in a dry spot. I was going to put around the side alcove but It is damp so will not do that now. It is very surprising what people toss out ,they are really pretty and there were about a dozen huge plants all in flower or bud ,just a leaf tip was hanging out so they would have gone in truck for mulsh .Im sure had they been put out on footpath people would snap up.think iv attached a photo which is not good its much brighter in the flesh.

I grow all mine in mulch. Some are sunlovers and some are shade lovers. Just keep the 'cups' topped up with water or spray with water.
