That is fantastic news. I'm so happy for you. Now all you need is a photo of hubby with a sledge hammer, looking like he's going to swing it at one of the walls, with the caption "We can do what we want with it, now!".

good on ya !! i can still remember the day we went into the bank and paid ours off we were so excited and the cashier was a right sour faced c*w haha we just laughed our heads of when we got out !!!

Did the bank try to talk you into getting another loan 'for any home renovations/extension'.? Ours did. I just laughed.

We paid ours off early and then had to pay them $400

just to get them to hand over the original title deed

That was a hellova lot of money 20 years ago.

Our re-payment rate was only $230 per month

But, yes, happy days.

Stawker thats exactly what happened to us !

and like i said she was realy nasty and took great pleasure in making us pay out another lump sum i think she was hoping we did'nt have it

but nothing could have worried us that day

do you think the "younger generation " think differently now though they seem to just keep borrowing more /newcar/holiday ext they cant wait and save up and pay less with no interest have to have it now

Yes. They did several times. Kept insisting that we pay out the mortgage but leave the loan open with the title I discharged. We had to keep saying no. We also had to pay the bank $320 plus the government charges to discharge mortgage and gain a clear title. Still money well spent. Because it was several days over the anniversary date of when we took out the original loan we had to pay an annual fee for loan charges.

Some of my inlaws just keep borrowing against their mortgage for cars, trailers, and stuff. One of them said to me last week that he'll never own his home unless he sells it and buys something outright.

anyway Congratulations Jean on achieving the aussie dream. (I'm still dreaming)

Are you going to keep putting that same amount away each month? and go on cruise each year to celebrate

Thanks Scarlett. Our son came up for 2days and set up an interest bearing account that you can deposit into but not withdraw for some time and set up a direct deposit into it for the amount we were paying each month in mortgage fees. So we will not miss the monthly amount but it is now earning interest. Thank goodness for children who know how to make money.

Well done. I made my first mortgage free purchase when I was 28 after selling my first property at a great profit.

I am happy for you and I hope you live a long and happy life mortgage free.

I have been mortgage free all my life and am loving it.
