There was a news story on the radio stating pets bitten by snakes this year has increased.

'Lort Smith Animal Hospital has had more than 20 snake bite cases this month already, which is the highest I've ever seen in my two decades as a vet,'

I am guessing the unusually warmer, dryer temperatures is bringing snakes in searching for water in backyards.

They can smell/taste water from a big distance.

I have been cleaning up junk around my farm in preperation for a field day and found a 1.2 mtr. brown sake under some roofing iron. Luckily it was a cool evening and he was a bit slow, so he has gone to heaven. I dont mind redbelly black snakes and I leave them be, but the browns are a bit too aggressive for my liking. My son nearly trod on a brown a few days ago. He was wandering down the street LOOKING AT HIS PHONE, like a normal teenager. The brown was sunning itself in the gutter and froze in fear as my son approached. Luckily a friend called out to the son just in time. I,m not sure who got the bigger suprise.

My dog was chasing what I thought was a mouse under the bird cage last week. The cage is against the house. When I moved the cage for him a juvenile brown shot out and headed for the open. Darn dog chased it and the snake did a u-turn and came hurtling back towards me. He tried to get into the cockatiel aviary but the wire was too small. I think he went back under the other cage from whence he came.

By the time I shooed the dog inside, had a nice cup of tea, thought about a lie down, fetched a rake and a rifle, and went back out and moved the cage again, he had disappeared.

I crawled under the house looking for it and found a dead headless snake. Also a brown. I thought it was just a cast of skin at first, so it had been there a while. I don't know who was repsonsible, the cat or the dog. I thought the cat had learnt her lesson and I didn't realise the dog was that stupid that he'd chase snakes.

There's been a few on the roads too.

I normally let them be unless they take up residence near the birds or the dog kennel.
