Gardening advice

Hi, am looking for some flowering plants for an area that faces west. It is an extremely hot position in summer.

Someone suggested standard rose and mini gardenia. Any suggestions most welcome. TIA.

I agree, roses do well in a hot position......I have roses that get all the sun and heat in summer, as long as they get plenty of water.

Salvia, does well too and that comes in various colours, they are long lasting, just needs a light prune when the flowers have finished, they will last for years..

Another one, it isi an anual that thrives in the sun is sunflowers, petunias, hollyhocks.

Thanks for the suggestions purple haze. Will look at Salvia, Hollyhocks as I'm not familiar with those.

I have a huge hollyhock growing, just flowering now.

i will charge up the batteries for my camera if you like and take a pic of it

it is white they are good plant if you want to take us some space, and very hardy too

also they self seed.

Carnations like the sun too.

It all depends in what part of Australia you live. Some areas are hot and humid, some are very dry. Plants react different to high humidity than in dry areas.

Geraniums and Pelargoniums are pretty hardy, love the sun and flower for most of the year. They come in a huge variety of colours.

Best thing is to go for little walks in the neighbourhood and see what thrives in their gardens. Say "Hello" to anyone that is working in their garden and have a chat about suitable plants.

Good way to make new friends.

that is the hollyhock it is approx 6 foot tall.

here we get both lots of heat dry and humid, and it doesn't seem to worry it.

Thanks for the pic latina. Looks lovely. Will checkout a couple of nurseries in the next week or 2.

I live in the nortn western suburbs of Sydney. We get the 2 extremes of temperature, frost in winter and extreme heat in summer. The garden in the back area that faces the same position (west) has a hot pink rose , geraniums and cannus lily which do well although the cannus lily does get some frost damage, but comes good.

The new garden is in the front and not a big area. Just had some sandstone edging done and want the new garden to look nice against the house.

Leggy, if you want a quick flash of colour for the festive season, how about some yellow marigolds, multi coloured petunias and salvias.

All of them will "tell" you when they need water.

I "tip" the main stem as I plant them, so that they bush out quickly.

Those hollyhocks are amazing. Wish I could grow them here, but it is too hot.
