Those Poor Greyhounds.

Having grown up on a farm I have never been maudlin or sentimental about animals, but this expose on The 7.30 Report last night , shocked me to the core. How can this possibly be allowed to continue?

Then someone needs to act as all Australian greyhounds are ear tagged,(so it would be easy to track down

the owners that sold these dogs).

Make an example of a few of them by banning them from owning racing dogs here.

I agree with Tazz.

There is plenty of regulation in the industry here in Australia to track the owners who are seling their dogs.

It is about time the governing bodies pulled them into line instead of just saying that they are doing the wrong thing.

I watched a little bit of it on 7.30 report but had to turn the channel as I couldn't watch it. The owners selling the dogs and the brokers sending them on need to be stopped

I have some friends who own two racing Greyhounds. The dogs are living with the family like any other pet and are very much loved. The dogs are gentle and affectioonate, even with the little children.

When they race it's like a job for the dogs, like Police dogs or Sheep dogs.

Sometimes they win and sometimes they loose a race, but the owners would never get rid of them, win or loose.

I watched the program and it made me feel sick.

I couldn't watch it all but what I saw made me literally want to throw up. Now it's been brought to the public eye one can only hope something good will come from it and save those beautiful dogs from the barbaric monsters.

Part of the newsletter I was sent,(I'm a part owner in a Victorian registered greyhound).

“We are working closely with Greyhounds Australasia to put a stop to all such exports but while trade with poorly regulated and enforced jurisdictions is banned under Victorian and National greyhound racing rules, it’s not yet illegal under Federal law.”

“Despite repeated appeals by Australian greyhound regulatory authorities for a Federal ban on exporting greyhounds to such jurisdictions, no action has been taken to date.”

“Everyone who loves this racing code and the greyhounds that are its heart must be united in stamping out this terrible trade.”

The problem is, it's not actually illegal - only against the rules of the Greyhound Racing Authority who issue the 'passports.' In fact no 'passports' have been issued for some time now and the trade could easily be prevented by the Mnister for trade making it ilegal to export the dogs without a passport. Both the racing body and the animal welfare people have urged him to do this, but he seems to think it wouldn't solve anything.

There's a big push in the animal welfare 'industry' of late to get greyhound racing banned completely in Australia. A lot of things have been exposed, especially the use of live bait for training purposes (like using live possums & rabbits for the greyhounds to chase). Charities like the RSPCA, Animal Welfare League NSW, and others are all involved.

That's old news and being dealt with.

So why not just ban all animals as there has to be a few of all types that have been abused by someone.

Ban all dogs as a few use them for dog fighting and pig hunting.

Ban chickens as some use them for fighting.

Ban horses as some do abuse them in all forms.

Most that are against "cruelty" have watched videos were something goes wrong that has been chosen

deliberately by the animal "activist" for shock effect and so many jump on the band wagon about animal

cruelty,etc.

For every one that abuses an animal there are over a hundred that do the right thing,(punish the ones that do

It seems to me the one insurmountable problem in the greyhound industry, when compared to horse racing, is the inevitable 'wastage'. A brood mare can give birth to only one foal in any given year - or twins if you are lucky. If they do not come up to scratch as racing prospects it is not that difficult to find homes for them. The gestation period for a greyhound though is a mere 63 days so ,theoretically at least, a female can produce more than one litter a year and while an average litter will be 6 puppies there can be as many as 15. Not all of them are going to be champions, so what happens to all the' rejects'? It is not going to be possible to find homes for all of them

It costs around $10,000 to breed a litter of pups and there are number of larger breeders that seem to produce

more than what's needed,(not all dogs in a litter may perform the same).

Smaller or one a year breeders tend to give dogs away to race at smaller venues.

You do have to get permission to breed so there is a form of control.

There never seems to an out cry for the number of animals euthanized at shelters and no statistics kept for the

number that are euthanized by their owners,(whether via a vet or other means).
