Christening gift ideas?

The LPs are being christened next month.

[NB I'm not interested in a debate about the whys and wherefores of that. I'm their grandparent not their parent]

I need some ideas for significant gifts to mark the occasion. I know I could do engraved silver or pewter mugs, but wondered about something a bit different. I want it to be something they will treasure into their grown up lives so nothing too baby or cutesy. Silver napkin rings came into my mind but who still uses linen napkins?

For both my Great Grandson I gave then a boxed set of coins fron the year of their birth. I got them from the Mint.

Have done a couple of framed Norman Lindsay - Limited Editions.

They have done well in value terms.

hhmmmmm I've been doing a bit of googling and this idea keeps popping up

This was a new one on me – but apparently it is becoming increasingly popular – boys are being given pocket watches at Christenings. It sort of makes sense when you think about it … your life’s span measured in time … a gift that is sure to be used and treasured for many years … a gift that can be engraved and personalised with a message. In fact pretty perfect all round

This sort of thing

That's a nice idea ooak, but as there are already about a million photos of each of them it might lose its "specialness"

A personal item of some sort that they can grow up with and a bank account that can be added to for future significant occasions. My grandmother gave my daughters a lovely piece of collectible china and a bank account which she added to every year. She died while my girls were in their teens but we kept the bank accounts intact and when they turned 21 they each got nearly $15000. My parents gave the girls Lladro lamp bases for their bedrooms and they still have them over 40 years later.

If you go the bank account idea, make sure it doesn't get eaten away by fees.

Friend of mine had 1000$ put in an account at his birth. By 21, it was 650$

The no-fee had become a monthly fee if it didn't have money going in every month.

I call that theft...but it's legal

holder (there are some really nice

ones)

i thought the st christopher pocket

watch was a great idea

Grandson wanted one for his 18th last year.

All his mates chipped in and bought him one - engraved for the occasion

They all want one

Pocket watches with a proper mechanical movement are gorgeous...I love them.
