ACL SURGERY IN DOGS

my 8 year old furbaby has been having trouble with his back leg the past 2 weeks, thought it may have been a bit of arthritis as he runs flat out at the park butt then pulls up a bit lame afterwards, however last night he was really bad after a run and wouldn't put any weight on it, crying when we tried to pick him up etc. So off to the vet today, she thinks it could be his ACL, so some pain relief and back next week for xray and go under a general for some further tests. If is is a tear then she said most likely surgery. I've read surgery may not be required in small dogs (he's only a little tacker 10kg, and rest may do the trick. Im jumping the gun a bit here as it could just be a sprain but interested if anyone has been down this track. thanks in advance.

Sorry you're going through this, I would certainly say there is a weakness there but if it were me I'd be getting a second opinion. Meanwhile the XRay will give you valuable information.

If left untreated, the lameness caused by a partially torn or ruptured CCL will improve or go away completely in many dogs, especially small ones, within three to six weeks. Regardless, the lack of a healthy CCL will cause the bones to rub against one another, leading to the development of bone spurs, pain, arthritis, and a decreased range of motion.

My ginger mog Milo did both his ACL's. Cats of course arely do one let alone two. But then Milo always did dance to the tune of his own drum.

When we rehomed our little Jack Russell the vet warned us that could happen and was not cheap for op. He suggested that we check around for an insurance policy that would cover this. We found one with Medibank Private and so far so good we haven't had to use it. It is not expensive about $30 per fortnight but could save thousands. I know that it will not help now, but when he is over this you might look into inurance.
