The seal of her TM31 model had only recently been replaced following a product recall.

Terrible burns. Poor woman.

Thankfully no children around to be burnt as well.

What a horrible accident.

Kitchen appliances should be handled with care, including the kitchen knife.

My daughter was given a food processor for mother's day by her hubby.

The first time she used it the rotating blade cut her finger quite deeply.

She refused to use it after that because she reckoned it had tasted blood and would get her again.

Stephen King wrote a horror story about vindictive kitchen appliances once.

I saw that they showed horrific burns.

It was lucky no one else was around. Doubt she'll ever use it again.

I feel for her and those burns will leave scars. She has many months of medical treatment ahead of her so I think she should sue and the company should pay for all the treatment she has to receive.

As for paying $2000 or more for an appliance, gullible fools, learn how to cook properly.

Like over an open fire, without electricity or gas do you mean? Come on, we all use appliances in some way or another to assist us everyday. How much do we pay for our ovens or cook tops?

I don't have one, but have thought of getting one and know others who have them. $2000 is a lot of money but so are other good quality kitchen appliances and for the person who wants to make their own flours etc, these machines are state of the art.

I could, in fact, point you to several other kitchen accessories that cost the same or more, and a raft of others that are close to the $1000 mark. Thngs such as mixers, blenders, coffee makers and so on.

So to me, talking of just the cost or saying someone should learn to cook misses the point. The point is an expensive & what should be good quality kitchen item has exploded and caused serious injury. Pressure cookers have the same potential danger but the good ones have safety features built in to avoid accidents.

What I don't like in all this are the attempts by the thermomix side to imply user fault.

Let's look at one comment by an ex-consultant:

Even long-term users had the ability to get complacent with safety features and potentially overfull the machine or use it at too high a speed, she said.

"What happened to her [Ms Jones] that is horrific but I think long time users are wondering how much user error is involved," she said.

Thermomix reps haven't been quite so blatant but their comments also leave the way open to imply user error.

They also denied there had been a general recall.

But surely consumers are entitled to expect that there would be safety features so that if any user over filled the machine or used it 'at too high a speed', the thing would switch off, not explode. After all, people can only use it at the speed it has been manufactured to go.

And there definitely was an identified problem well before this accident.

That report is from October 2014 & there is a person who replied to the report, mentioning similar problems with their own machine even though the serial number was different.

The model that exploded is the old model, not the newer TM5, but I would want to know the problem has been fixed with some fail safe technology before I would buy one now.

Agree.

When a major problem appears to be ignored, the last thing I'd do

is get one.

It's about the cost of a recall versus the probability of accidents to companies.

They should also be thinking about future lost sales (think VW, forced into a recall here by media pressure), since it's only the money they care about.

I think it is really interesting that people can be persuaded to part with so much money for something that is just not needed, and can be dangerous. Less you do to food, better it is for you.

If you use it and cook healthy meals, avoid additives it can be one of the healthiest investments saving a lot of money in the long run.

Everything is a danger when intructions are not followed when talking appliances.

The article doesn't say she was careless, though. It made a "funny noise" and when she moved closer to check it out the lid burst off. That could be, because it wasn't secure due to human error or a fault. Since there are lawyers involved we might find out later on.

Either way, be careful with yours, ok? Don't investigate it if there's a strange thing just run.

My mum had a pressure cooker when I was a kid. That burst open, spraying everywhere. It was the seal at fault. Noone hurt, we'd just left the room and ka-pow. She had used it fine for a couple of months.

Any appliance does need to be used as per instructions, true 🙂

I have an electric pressure cooker, it is brilliant, I was terrified at first of course.

The older model of Thermomix has had some issues with the seal, it does need to be replaced every 2 years I think.

'Unfortunately, Ms Jones has declined our requests to investigate the appliance.

'Without a thorough investigation of the appliance, the manufacturer is unable to determine the cause of this incident. Unfortunately, on occasion the appliance can be used incorrectly.'
