Brexit - Yes or No?

Warnings about global economic fallout if Britain votes to leave the European Union are reaching fever pitch a day out from the so-called Brexit referendum.

In an op-ed in the Guardian, billionaire currency trader George Soros said a "Leave" vote could severely damage British living standards and potentially trigger a major crash in the British pound.

Economists divided on Brexit

BlackRock managing director and global chief investment strategist Richard Turnill said if Britain does exit, he expected to see volatility and significant declines in the Sterling.

"We expect to see significant declines in domestic UK assets, particularly smaller, mid-cap equities, but actually as you've seen over the last few days, the volatility I think is going to extend to broader European assets and global assets. I think you'll see flows into safe havens in the event of an exit, back into treasuries, back into gold," Mr Turnill said.

But British economist Roger Bootle, the founder of Capital Economics disagreed, arguing the UK would not be necessarily worse off if it left the EU.

"It's not going to be a case of European politicians saying to their own industries and to us we can't trade, that would be illegal under WTO rules," Mr Bootle said.

"It's going to be a matter of the EU if worse comes to worse, treating us exactly as they treat all sorts of countries around the world, including the United States, India, China, Japan, etc."

My son, who lives in England and works in the finance sector in London, wants England to stay in the EU. I say they should leave. We've been sending each other terse emails.

I have always been for coming out of this morass of unelected and invisible bureaucratic old boys club. We are not allowed to know who these individuals are - and there are literally hundreds of them - and even if we knew, we wouldn't be able to get rid of them, unlike our MPs. They have complete control of our sovereignty, from our laws, to our border control. It's a stifling and restrictive organisation. From it's beginnings where it was originally set up as a common MARKET, it has now morphed into this super state. I could fill this page up with drawbacks and pitfalls from being in this nasty energy sapping organisation, but I won't bore you all.

Icy, with all due respects to your son - who is perfectly entitled to his opinion - he's in finance, so, as Mandy Rice-Davies once famously said: "Well he would say that wouldn't he" ?

If Brexit wins (and my hunch is it will), the political and economic repercussions will be felt around the world as far as Australia. It could start the break up of the unstable EU, which in turn could create more problems for continental Europe than the EU was supposedly designed to prevent in the first place. But we can't go on as we are. We have to Brexit:

I have sent it to him. Whether he'll watch it or not, or dismiss Mr Rees as just another RWNJ as he has Nigel Farage et al, is another matter.

Oh please, not another cucumber standards and heaps of similar nonsense, which has NEVER had anything to do with EU. Some veg/fruit standards existed long before EU, others are not true. These stories were made up by jurnos sitting in a pub during times when nothing much was happening and competing who can make the most improbable story that will be accepted as a truth just by being repeated often enough.

The Brits carry on as if they were the only ones that get people from other countries to come there. There are plenty of of Brits living in other EU countries. Some also claim the very generous social benefits and excellent medical care, which is available to them in many of the EU countries. It goes both ways.

Why do you think that USA is so powerful? Because they are united (sort of) and there is many of them. Splintered Europe is only going to be bunch of small countries again. And Britain has stopped being great when they lost their colonies, and unless they plan to start invading and exploiting other countries again, there is not much chance that alone they will be doing better than as a part of EU.

what i wanna know is,

if the leave vote doesnt get up will we be getting boat loads of fleeing poms heading our way and if they do how will our govt treat them?

will turn back the boats still be the war cry of the feds?

I wonder why are we so hung up about boundaries. Present shape of most countries is relatively recent anyway, and in the past people moved quite freely except when some rules tried to keep their labourers put.

You're forgetting the resurrection of the Bubonic, matey. That's also coming our way, apparently. BTW, there are now rumblings by the rest of the Eurosceptic countries, to also move out of the crumbling and backward Euro Political Party. We live in hopes, and good luck to them, not if, but when they decide extricate themselves.

In 2016 A.D. a small island nation representing less than 1% of the worlds population but one of the richest countries in the world decided that it couldn't sha...re even a tiny amount of that wealth with its close neighbours or people from other countries who didn't have as much as them.

They voted to leave the worlds larchest single market that they were pretty much in charge of, winning on well over 90% of votes.

A point of historical interest is that the referendum was won because elderly and working class people who were getting little support under the right wing austerity based government of the time were convinced that by leaving the worlds largest mechanism for sharing they would somehow end up with a fairer society where people would share with them more.

This led to an even more unfair society and the small island nation ended up being devided up even further, based on the same logic, until it ended up being 3 nations full of people who believed that the smaller they were the less they would have to share with others and therefore the more people would share with them.

In hindsight this logic was fundamentaly flawed from a social, economic and even moral point of view but at the time a man with funny hair said it was true.

Over the coming decade this tiny island of 3 nations became politicaly irelevant and the unrealistic level of self importance it had built up in the 17th and 18th century through colonisation and some early technology innovations were of little importance in the modern world.

Whilst historians agree that leaving the EU accelerated the demise, the underlying cause was a social phenomenon where no one wanted to share with each other.
