There are lots of gluten/lactose free products ( including breads, pastas, butter-type replacments, yoghurts etc) readily avaiable in supermarkets these days. Using these items with fresh/unprocesse items makes preparing gluten/wheat/lactose free diets a lot easier than in was a few years ago. Health food stores are also a good source of alternatives. Some bakeries offer wheat/gluten-free baked goods and there are quite a few good cook books around for allergy-free recipes. Plus, Google is always your friend!

Marina.

If you really think about it, it can't be that hard omitting dairy and wheat.

Even the good old Sunday roast would fit the bill.

Meat and veg are gluten and dairy free.

Make gravy from pan juices and thicken with corn flour (not wheaten flour)

Plenty of gluten free breads available at supermarkets to make sandwiches for lunch

The gluten free bread from the supermarket used to be rather solid and heavy and a bit tasteless. Better for toast than sandwiches.

It may have improved since I bought it though.

Have you been to see a doctor who has tested you and found that you are one of the approximately 1 % of the population who are Coeliac ? Has a doctor tested you and found that you have a genuine Lactose intolerence ?

Going Gluten Free and Lactose free means your food bill will rise signifigantly and you will be rerstricting your dining choices, particularly if you ever dine out with friends or family.

Perhaps of more concern is that gluten free products are often less healthy than non gluten free. Gluten free bread for example is made with much higher levels of saturated fats and sugar than non gluten free bread, in order to try to make it taste more palitable.

For a very small percent of the population who have a genuine, medicaly diagnosed dietry intolerance or coeliac disease, gluten free and lactose free diets are an expensive but essential way of life. For most other people it is nothing more than a celebrity driven fad.

If you suspect you have a dietry intolerence or are coeliac it may pay to see your doctor before changing your diet to one that is more expensive, restrictive and unneccesary.

Gluten free bread is ideal for people who have never tasted real bread, to the rest of us, it tastes like cardboard, my two daughters have coeliac, a grandaughter and possibly other family members, some waiting for biopsy results, some waiting for endoscopies.

we had succesfully been doing gf for 6 years for the grandaughter., however there are more options now. It costs an extra $5000 per year for each person to eat GF

Join the Coeliac society for info, advice and discount card for Coles

http://www.coeliac.org.au/

I am currently testing bread and pastry recipes for GF, using a Thermomix but you can successfully use other appliances to cook the same food.

Avoid glucose products unless the label says corn, Bulla ice cream is GF

The very best flour is the Easy Bakers instant oven bread from Coles, yeast dairy and wheat free, I use it as plain flour with xanthan gum, it's like bread improver.

Quirky cooking is a good resource site.

https://www.facebook.com/quirkycooking/posts/505970206123554

My go to for great meals that are mostly GF,

http://skinnymixers.com.au/

My friend is gluten intolerant and has a daughter who is gluten/lactose/fructose intolerant.

It's a difficult combo as she is coeliac & has had health problem till they found out what was causing her troubles.

Bread: My friend makes gluten free bread in a bread maker. It is cheaper and tastes quite okay, according to my friend. This may be a simple option for you.

Recipes: There are a lot online now. I have a granddaughter who has an allergy to eggs and came across a good chocolate cake recipe with no eggs/butter or milk. Some people said they also made it with GF flour.

Have a search online for easy recipes that appeal to you, there are a lot now.

Sushi is good but be careful as it needs to be refrigerated.

My friend is thinking of getting a thermomix because it can make flour and other types of milk eg almond milk, in seconds. There are a lot of flours that don't involve wheat. She has found she can make a lot of 'normal' things by simply substituting the flour and let's face it, white flour isn't great for any of us now, not the way it is processed.
