Hi nics,

This is not from personal experience, but the horror stories of old regarding (false teeth as they were known) are no longer true.

A friend of mine had rather heavy duty meds she had to take over a course of years, and this badly deteriorated the enamel on her teeth and she had to get dentures, only top, the bottom teeth remain okay for some wierd reason.

She was freaking as she was only 38. She has had them now for 6 years and has had no problems at all.

They look natural, and any little problems, pinching, ill fit etc were easily and quickly remedied by the denture specialist.

I asked her if they felt like, you iknow, her mouth was crowded sort of thing and she said in the beginning definitely, but now hardly notices she is wearing them.

She was given a wealth of info to take home regarding problems and care and it all went quite smoothly for her. As I say dentistry and dentures in parrticular has come ahead in leaps and bounds since my poor old granny had hers.

Just a quick bit of advice - my father's a dental technician and he tells anyone that if there are issues of discomfort etc, keep going back to the dentist until they're solved, Too many people put up with problems because they don't want to bother the dentist, or feel it's not their right. And don't be fobbed off - people often come to Dad on the quiet for what is quite a simple issue believing (or being made to feel) that it's their problem and they just have to suffer in silence. New impressions can be taken if necessary, but nobody can help if they don't know.

Cheers,

Marina.

I need to lose a few teeth (also a medication issue combined with over brushing) and am looking into implants rather than dentures or a partial plate. Yes, implants are expensive, but so are a good set of dentures! I'm lead to believe that implants feel more realistic when biting and chewing food. You can also take a bite from an apple (as one example), whereas according to my now departed Nana, you couldn't do with dentures. She had trouble eating steak too. She got her last set 2 years before she died (she's been gone 6 years) so they were probably a good "modern" set.

I just hate the idea of something in my mouth. I used to have to wear a plastic thing in my mouth for a badly clicking jaw and it drove me nuts. It always felt foreign. I swore back then I'd never get dentures.

Nics, you haven't said full or partial.

Truth time.......I had to have dentures when I was 25 (upper only, still have botttom ones).

In 40 years I have had 3 sets. The first set went in immediately after extraction (under general anaesthetic). The second set was after 12 months when the gums had shrunk.

The third set was when the second set became unsightly (old, staining, chipping etc)

I have never had any problems from the get-go with loose fitting or painful rubbing.

Once with the second set, I had to have a slight adjustment.

I can eat apples and things like that with no problems. I don't have any problems

with things getting caught underneath and rubbing, and I've never used Polident either.

A first, it feels like a mouth full of bubble gum, but that feeling goes away

after a while.

You will lose some taste buds and want more salt though, because the roof of your

mouth is covered.

Shop around for price. There's a huge difference. A dentist will charge

for being the middleman and want his cut.

A dental technician is far cheaper to do the job. He's the one to go to when

you need that second set, after your gums have shrunk.

I had braces on my teeth as a child and the surface of the enamel on my teeth reacted against them and I had endless problems with fillings, holes appearing in the surface afterwards. At 21 my dentist recommended, with reluctance, that I get my teeth taken out. I did and I cant say I have had any problems at all (in over 40 years), although part of it is mind over matter I think. My mother had dentures and could not eat apples, anything hard etc etc.. I was determined from outset that I would eat everything, and I do. The only thing I have ever had a problem with is some chewing gum and occasionally a tomato seed will get underneath my bottom plate. Dentures don't bother me at all, never did and after putting up with an unhealthy mouth with no solution in sight, dont regret it for a moment. Have had two sets in 42 years.

I hope this is not going to sound rude, but if you have a health care/pension card of some kind you can go through Community Dental Health Centre.

Ask Centrelink (or even your GP) for the CDHC that is in your district. It is a longer process, a ew back and forward trips, fittings, moulding, impressions etc, but it is free.

My friend (Health Care Pension) did it that way and then once she had the dentures and they had settled she went to a dental technician for the adjustments as the y are a lot quicker and often able to be done on the spot.

I qualify now for treatment at a Melbourne Community Dental Centre..... it is very impressive with fully qualified staff and state of the art equipment. I pay $20 a visit for whatever is done, and from what I remember I don't think I paid for my dentures , though about 6 years ago.
