I get where you're coming from Dave, but under the circumstances I think it was fair judgement.

It was after all an accident, not premeditated, no intent.

'put your hands up mate get a reduced sentence your going to prison regardless might as well get a discount'

Vehicular manslaughter is what it used to be called and it used to carry a minimum sentence of 7 years,(that's for

any death caused by someone driving a vehicle).

As he ignored the 80 km signs to me it's no longer accidental and it should be classified as deliberate,(if he had

been doing the speed limit the accident wouldn't have happened).

That makes it his deliberate fault and it's about time the courts started treating it as such,(and started imposing

a heavier sentence).

and how exactly do foriegn visitors get permission to drive on our roads?

do they have to pass a written test to show they know our road rules and then have a test with a licenced tester on the road to prove they can actually drive?

or is it just a rubber stamp because they hold a drivers license from some other country?

I'm not totally sure, but I think if they hold an OS licence they can get a permit here. Just be careful about putting your foot on a zebra crossing before they come to a halt. I'm sure some of them are lacking in the peripheral vision department.

The Indians can buy a truck licence for around $1,300 as soon as they get off the plane. I'd image citizens of other countries would have a similar set up for their fellow countrymen when they arrive. If you think I'm joking about the truck licences, ask any NSW RTA/RMS inspector. They're sick to death of them. As soon as they shut one group down, a new one starts up.

If you are going to be doing a lot of driving in foreign countries you should get an international licence but for a limited time you can use your Australian one.

I believe foreigners have 6 months before they need to get an Australian licence.

Can't imagine doing 121 in an 80 zone; what a tool. However all things considered it seems pointless locking this bloke up forever.

When I looked for other sources on this story I found that Thomas Towle, the loser who killed six teenagers when he was driving with his kid on his lap and then ran away leaving his kid behind ten years ago in Mildura, was released after only 7 years. Then locked up again for another year for being a risk to society when he breached his parole. He will never be worth a pinch of scheisse.

The judges aren't on the same page as the community, that is for sure.

I live in Melbourne and I am sick to death of criminals-sometimes quite violent ones-getting a slap on the wrist.

There was a case a while back where a man about 18 or 19 was hooning-you know where they get their cars and deliberately speed around at night in competition with their mates, well he was doing that-he killed someone and was let off with no conviction at all as the judge 'didn't want to ruin his life'.

Every case has to be judged on its merits but for me the worst are violent crimes eg home invasions, bashings etc & they should get the full brunt of the law and I don't care what age the criminals are.

For cases where someone is killed in a car accident but the driver being sentenced was driving fairly closely within the law, perhaps made an error, then some leniency.

But in this case the driver was going a full 40kph over the speed limit so he deserves a stiff sentence. Mind you, I think the violent criminals who bash etc deserve an even stiffer sentence.

But do they get it? Of course not.
