I am so sick to death of this modern behaviour and attitude of "my kids can do no wrong". Or, you have to let them do it because they are expressing themselves and if you stop them doing it, it will upset their precious self esteem. The so called "experts" go on with how discipline is bad, saying no is bad, parents have to be their best friend and not their parents, otherwise they'll end up with all sorts of mental health issues.

Funny how Gen X and before seemed to turn out OK for the most part, knew right from wrong, were told no and it meant no, were disciplined appropriately, had to work for anything they wanted, if something broke it wasn't replaced, kids were taught manners and they weren't wanting to kill or harm themselves because someone looked at them. Yes, some did have mental health issues, but majority didn't.

Gen Y and beyond, never told no, or if they were, it was followed by a yes when they chucked a tanty. They are given everything they want and more, with parents using the excuse of "I want them to have everything I didn't have". Discipline is non existent because it upsets their precious self esteem and when they are playing up, it's excused as them expressing themselves. If they break something, like their $1,200 iphone, it's replaced. Very few kids/teens DON'T have some sort of mental health issue. Very few AREN'T on some sort of medication.

So, discipline = well behaved, well manners kids and adults vs no discipline = out of control brats with mental health issues. Remind me again why modern parenting is encouraged?

Flog the little shets.

I saw an article about a lady who has lodged a complaint about "Rude staff" at a Woolies store . Her pregnant sister and she were shopping with sisters two young kids when a woolies staffer approached them and asked them to control the kids ,said she always managed to control her 5 ect.

What got me was the lady complaining said;

"the kids were just running around the isles, yelling a bit, getting items off the shelf and tossing them in the trolly or on the floor ,you know as kids do....my sister and I were just trying to do our weeks shop we were trying to stop them but my sister is pregnant and I was there to help her so it was hard.there was no need for a woolworths staff to be so rude it ruined our trip "

Woolworths have offered their sincere apologies and will speak to the staff involved 😠

Im dubious as to who owes who an apology, I feel for the staff member ...they sound like little horrors by the aunts own description

I would expect to be told to leave if I had kids tossing things on the floor ,her attitude seems incredible. And for woolies to apologize seems to be really bad even if the staff member was a bit too personal or something it would be good for woolies to point out the kids behavior was not acceptable.

If some customer fell due to the kids bad behavior I bet head office would be quick to ask why staff did not step in to stop it.

sign of the times I guess...

It seems to me that if it is not acceptable for Woolworths staff to try and control customer's children then the customer should be asked to leave and take their unruly offspring with them.

Better to lose one or 2 families as customers than risk every other customer in the store leaving in disgust

A similar story when I was grocery shopping in the local family operated shop. Mother was quite uninterested that her 2 little darlings who were running up and down the aisles and screaming and trying to destroy the shop. It wasn't a good look (or sound! ) at 8am.

The owner asked the mother to control her children - which she didn't - she was way, way too busy reading the packaging labels on everything.

Eventually, the owner asked her to leave her shopping behind and take the children home. She was only allowed to come back if the kids were not with her.

Needless to say, word got round and business improved.

everyone has an opinion and has a right to it

mine is that there are far too many children being born for the wrong reasons

like to be company and be an object to make the mum for a while popular with her peers

"look at (insert name here) s new cute baby, can i hold her/him. oh wow. ect ect"

or to be an income via centerlink which includes a roof over their heads paid for by the tax papyer.

i do understand why single mums originally got a pension and help with having a decent living but its now become a way of life. more kids more money.

how often do i see a news story of a couple reating their cash cows like vermin? usually the kids have several different fathers. i have said so many times, you have to prove you can drive before getting a license but any two dropouts can make a human being!

we (society) dug this hole and i dont see any way out. every so often the govt just digs the hole a bit deeper thinking they are making things better. it doesnt.

one mistake i can live with but when we see very young women with 3 or 4 kids and not married, not working and not doing a good job of parenting its gone too far.

i dont know the details of the OP story but ive witnessed plenty of kids doing as they please in shopping centers while mum/dad take no notice. if the authorities did take action it would prolly cost a fortune so they dont and we get these terrible cases popping up in the news of shocking treatment of kids and sometimes deaths.

of course there is going to be problems, a lot of these kids are being born to kids or underdeveloped adult children with no idea how to raise a child. its so easy making a baby so hard doing everything afterwards.

All children can have a bad day and if the parent was "trying" to do the right thing and her control her child/children, no one has the right to speak to them like that at all.

---------------------------------------

I guess this is where I would have a different opinion.

The children weren't just being noisy, I could live with that.

They were throwing items on the floor or into trollies etc.

In other words, damaging stock.

A staff member had every right to talk to the adults. Personally, if I had been the staff member in that situation, I would have left out the bit about how much better I had done with my own kids back in the day. Nothing is more calculated to cause resentment than being told something like that.

But the staff member did the right thing by the store in trying to protect the products. How would you like it if you bought eg a packet of biscuits and found they were all broken inside because they had been thrown around? You might expect the store to replace them. Yet if the women here had been asked to pay for any damage, I bet they wouldn't.

A lot of people are all about their rights but never accept they have any responsibilities.

As for woolies, I think they are gutless. How about they stand up for staff for a change? Why issue an apology?

At most they should say they are sorry the matter was not handled better but people need to closely supervise their children when they are in the store.

I find working in retail one issue is parents being unable to be the bad guy in their kids eyes,I hear them tell kids " stop that or the lady will get cross" or similar. I know when most of us were young our parents were prepared to be parents not our buddy .Not to mention the fact that such parents just repeat it over 10 times while actually doing nothing to stop bad behavior.

I would be warned once and if I had to be told again id be in trouble with mum .

When we had our shops. I used to find that would happen, so I would look them in the eye and say "No' I wont, I don't discipline other peoples' children", I usually found they didn't hang around for much longer lol ...
