Uluru national park closed-flash flooding

A massive Christmas night storm and heavy rain that has sparked damaging flash floods in Central Australia is being described as a once-in-a-half-century weather event by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

A quarter of the community of Kintore was evacuated after it was drenched by 232mm of rain in the 24 hours since 9:00am yesterday — taking the December total to a record 373.4mm.

61.4mm fell from 8:00pm to 9:00pm on Christmas night alone, which BOM labelled a one-in-50-year rainfall event.

As beautiful as it looks, there is a downside to the rain coming off the rock.

When we were there, it was explained to us, that it is a 3 hour climb

and people choose to sleep up on top, and there are no toilet facilites.

When it rains all that 'stuff' gets washed down and causes health problems with

contaminated water.

I really think they should enforce the 'no-climbing' rule. But unfortunately,

people think it has to be done, and they will lose tourist dollars if they can't climb it.

We didn't climb it but chose to walk the perimeter.

I am in utter awe of that bluddy big rock. It is magnificent, and all Australians should

get to see it once in their lifetime.

im realy dissapointed we did not make it there

we were going to do it on "the next time round" wont happen now
