As we in Melbourne usually get your weather this really interests me as we had a lot of rain last night and it's grey and wet today but the forecast for the week is fairly rainfree and mild, like late 20s. Not that that's gospel as anything can happen here weatherwise.

I,m as happy as a pig in poo !!!!! ..........I run sheep in the hills surrounding Adelaide and the wet summer has been magic for feed growth and water supplies.

The sheep are in fantastic shape which is always good when they are halfway through pregnancy and wool growth has been exceptional. We are making plans for lambing in 2-3 months time and have high hopes for a boomer lambing season. Fingers crossed as we have gambled all of our resources on trippling our sheep flock in the last two years to move away from ebay selling. So far it looks to be paying off with record wool and lamb prices available at the moment

All in all its a pretty exciting time to be a sheep grazier in the Adelaide hills................Send her down Hughie......

The heat is headed for Sydney by the end of the week when we have been told to expect 39+ for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The AC will be going flat out 24/7 and no cooking will be done.

My kitchen faces West and gets the full force of the afternoon sun. It also leads onto a paved courtyard so even when the temperature drops it takes a while to filter through.

We will live on cold meats and salad for 3 or 4 days.

i hope everyone coping with high tempertures do not lose power.

here in south australia some people were cut off as there was not enough power generated. not because we didnt have generating capacity but the national power bosses (based in victoria) decided switching people off of was better than turning a second generator on.

this is why privatising power generation was a very short sighted idea. governments see the cash and ignore the results 'down the track'

we are now seeing many of our dirty coal fired generators being closed dow, i believe they have actually reached the end of their service lives and really need replacing with new generators of some kind.

in the old days the government owned everything, if a new power station was needed they would build one. private owners dont want to spend that money. they say to themselves, eh, we can make less money for a bit until demand drops.

we are doing ok, i have the airconditioning running all the time. as its evaporative it struggles on above 40c weather. and if it gets at all humid it just becomes very very sweaty. so far its been pretty good, when outside is 43c inside is about 33c a drop of 10 degrees.

foo sleeps all the time, there is plenty of cool water to drink. i take him outside a couple of times a day so he can have a pee and we get up before sunrise for his morning walk and wait till the sun sets for the nightly.

rosie actually seems to like laying in the hottest places during the day, she'll get in a window between the curtains and window! she comes out every so often and flops on the floor but once she cools down returns to the window!

i put fresh water in the canary cage every day, on these hot days he jumps straight in the water and has a bath, flinging water everywhere.

we have been very lucky as we have not had our power cut off, i feel for those who have lost theirs. its not good enough in 2017 for anyone to be cut off because there isnt enough to go around. so i'm crossing everything we do noy join the cut offs whilst this heatwave continues.

most of the time having a privatised elecricity system is fine, its during heatwaves we discover its pitfalls.

5 minutes after that photo rosie was back in the front window in the sun, lol

as my house is an off the ground home, not on a concrete slab, the hot air gets under the house and floors although not hot are no cooler than anywhere else. even the tiled floor in the bathroom warms up during very hot weather. never even thought about something like that when buying the house. would i have still bought here had i known, most likely yes as theres not a huge choice here for sea front homes that i could afford that have slab floors.

small 2 bedroom houses are really most commonly built this way here.

Today's modern houses may have concrete slabs, but most of them also seem to be lacking eaves, verandahs etc, so there is nothing to keep the hot sun off the windows. Unless there is an awning on every window, to keep the sun off the glass, these houses heat up very quickly and require more power to keep them cool. They also have tiled roofs, which maintain the heat for longer than a tin one, hence the house stays hotter for a longer period. imo They are not designed to cope with the Aust heat at all.

my house has a full length garage along one side, shade cloth over the top of the other side and a roofed in back area with that smoked plastic corregated stuff to keep it dry across the back. i have my clothes line there so i can get stuff dry most days even if its raining. only the front of the house has no protection but i do have very heavy curtains on the front windows that block out heat quite well.

but not much you can do during a heat wave, everything gets hot eventually.

i have raked ceilings throughout so no heat build up in the roof.

ceiling fan in the front room to keep the air moving.

i replaced the evaporative aircon last summer so its about as good as it gets there.

in my bedroom ive installed a wall mounted oscillating fan, works better than the ceiling fan i had before.

only one more day, fingers crossed, sunday should be back to the 20's
