Many years ago I was sitting around a campfire with a local " dogger " employed by the government to control dingoes and wild dogs in the remote S.A national parks. He was a real outback bushy type who lived off the land and drove a battered Toyota Land Cruiser ute. He claimed to have trapped an unusual animal resembling a tassie tiger which had stripes on its hind quaters. He sent the skull to the S.A museum for identification. ( apparently the skulls where the method of identification used to identify dog breeds 30 years ago before DNA became fashionable. ). The results came back as an unknown animal that did not match any known dog type creatures.

There have been other stories of tassie tiger type sightings by reputable locals in the area.

On a slightly different note, a close friend of mine who is one of the most succesful and respected farmers in the district was out roo shooting one night, when he and others in the vehicle spotted a large 1.5 metre long Puma type black cat scavenging on a dead sheep. There have been 4wd tourists report similar sightings which are noted in google searches.

And just to get a little weirder, a close relative of mine who is one of the straightest shooting, sceptical types you would ever meet was out shooting with friends in a very remote area of S.A when a flying saucer landed on a hill nearby. .........And no he doesnt drink or smoke anything at all................He doesnt like to talk about it because it is just to strange ........,..but............

I think it's a dog. Or maybe a kanga like ecar suggested. There have been tons of reported sightings of Tasmanian Tigers. If they really still existed someone would have better evidence by now.

The possum who lives here is carrying a little one in the her pouch at the moment.

When she walks, she waddles, and on the one occasion I've seen her run, it was with a loping gait similar to the beast in the video.

Going out on a limb, completely... This is pure conjecture, given that a possum is the size of a house cat, and a thylacine is the size of big dog, "But they're both marsupials..." it could be that the beast in the video is female thylacine with a young one in her pouch, moving at a decent speed...

The young are carried in a pouch, set in the lower abdomen, and that affects the way the legs work because the young one presses against the pelvis and the hip joints.

Or it could be a dog with a sore foot...

It's a wild guess, based on similarity, but that's like saying an oak tree and a cherry tree are the same because they both lose their leaves in Winter.

It's a "maybe" scenario.

But wouldn't it be great if it was a female with a young one...?

😉

I have a house on nsw south coast. 10 mins from the beach, surrounded by bush. Have a possum feeder on the deck ad regular possum visitors. I can actually walk right over to them while they are standing on the possum feeder eating. Anyway once a mother possum turned up with her baby. Mother possum very protective so when I walked out on the deck baby possum jumped oto her back and they sped off into the trees. It was amazing to watch.

I've "met", in an informal sense, the little possum - Mum stood upright, facing me, and there in the middle of her belly was a black, hairy patch - someone's back, or shoulder, I think, ha ha.

There'll be more to see when there's more to see.

We have breakfast every (her) morning, so I'm going to meet it one way or another.

It's a shame that the photographer couldn't have got over to where the "dog" walked, and got photos of tracks.

I know, it's a very big ask...

🙂
