I'm too poor to travel.
Maybe if I could I wouldn't be taking my phone.
There is no way I'd be handing over my phone to anyone. I don't care what clothes they are wearing.
I thought New Zealand was a friendly country

Fines of up to $4000 Thats right $4000 if you refuse to unlock your phone for customs personel

when you come into the country.

Great way to destroy the tourism.

I would never hand a phone with any personal information on it over to anyone willingly, absolutely nobody.

Why or how anyone would or could trust airport security people to not retain (for the want of a better word) certain details is beyond me. Of course, there are separate passwords for various functions such as banking, but if certain authorities get their hands on those, kiss the money in the account/s goodbye; history shows even security employees have those who are dishonest amongst the ranks..

I've chosen to have a 'dumb' phone, one that is not and cannot be connected to the internet, it's just a telephone, ring in, ring out and text, that's it, but I don't use the text anyway.

Fat lot of good that would be for airport security ....

There are ways that the smart phone can be 'dried' and then reloaded later via the internet, so people who want to keep their information secure certainly can do that. The criminal element would be aware of that also.

I think New Zealand is making a huge mistake ...

there is a simple solution for this . . . . . don’t take your main phone with you when travelling overseas.

A friend of mine got a new ‘basic’ phone and loaded it with the contacts he wanted to use while travelling. He had hardly used it before he left so there was no great “history” to speak of. Little or no browser history also helped.

Then, when asked to hand over his phone there was no hesitation. They looked at his text history and then handed it back as there was nothing else really to look at. Before returning to Australia he uploaded his photos to the cloud and then wiped the phone history and did a factory reset. That means returning to Australia without any problems regarding a phone.

As far as social media account content goes, I think that all people should be wary of what they post on social media regardless of travel intentions.

You’ll never see me threaten posters, you won’t see me revealing too much of my life backstory, I rarely post my personal political opinions, my posts can be pretty boring and I know it.

okay, if you can afford to travel overseas but not afford $100 for a basic pre-paid mobile then you can’t afford it . . . . . . but when you travel overseas you need to abide with the laws and customs of the overseas country . . . . . after all, we expect visitors to Australia to abide by our laws when they arrive here!

If officers in an overseas country wants to look through your phone history when you arrive on their doorstep then you have two choices . . . . . comply, and hand over the phone, OR, find yourself in a bit of trouble getting through their customs and immigration and possibly be detained and/or sent back home.

Circumstances in overseas countries will be different to what we are used to here in regards to privacy laws, customs requirements etc. To expect to be able to be excused from requirements regarding handing over your mobile on arrival is a bit arrogant if you ask me . . . . . . . . but what the heck certucks, go ahead and take your regular phone with all its history and stand up for your rights when you go to the USA, Indonesia or other country. You tell them they have no right to look through your phone (and see where that gets you).

If you travel to another country you need to be prepared to abide by their laws/customs 100% or else not go.

I think my advice regarding having a basic ‘travel’ phone makes sense to those who want to abide by overseas country customs/laws AND maintain some level of privacy that we have here in Australia.

on the other hand, there is another choice that gets around the phone issue . . . . . . . leave the phone at home and enjoy a ‘social media free’ holiday . . . . . . it is a viable alternative Be warned though, that leaving your phone at home might not stop your social media history being scrutinised i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. as they can be accessed whether you present a phone or not.
