Too deep for me................... All I see is a very talented artist who has created an amazing work of art . Why cant we just celebrate the guys skill and talent and appreciate his work without constantly being offended by every little thing ?

i dislike horse racing, and any thing that requires an animal to entertain us for their right to life.

You are entitled to hold that opinion dave and i can understand where you are coming from, I just don't take it all as literally as you.

Like thoroughbred horses there are some people who live to run. They spend years of their lives getting out of bed at sparrows call to train before work and then again after work. On the weekends they attend track & field competitions, running in races against each other. They progress up the rankings and for an elite few, the dreams of racing against competitors from other countries come true. The pinnacle of sport for any athlete is to be part of the entertainment spectacle viewed by millions called the Olympics. Pure entertainment for the masses as we watch humans running against each other in competition, barracking for our favorite and celebrating their achievements.

Carefully bred and highly trained race horses and greyhounds are no different to these humans. From what I have seen, they are hard wired to run fast and compete against others in the race. All humans are doing is channeling that energy and natural instinct in a structured format. It could be argued that it is cruel to keep animals that have been bred over generations to run fast cooped up in some-ones backyard where they dont have the opportunity to ever run fast with others of their own kind. ie as family pets.

people who decide to be athletes who then break down mid race (or whatever) very rarely get 'put to sleep'

and please lets not go back down the 'greyhounds love to race' line again.

we have witnessed just way too much 'leaked' evidence of what happens to many greyhounds who dont win.

sure some very lucky ones get rehomed like my Foo, but dont kid yourself we will ever see 100% rehoming of ex racing greyhounds.

now that the outrage of the 'live baiting' and 'mass graves' stories has blown over its back to normal for the GH racing business i'm sure.

The only people that we lock away in confined spaces and deprive them of contact with family and friends are serious criminals. What about all the animals that humans take on as pets and then decide it's not for them so take it to a

An animal right campaigner has a very small view of what they perceive as a problem and they will not take

into account the other larger scale problems that far out weigh their objectives,(you even have some that

don't want the feral cat,rabbits or other pest species killed because it's hurting an animal).

Feral means a danger to Australia's wildlife and land,(they need to be destroyed to restore the balance),

i think this threads gone way off course

i only put it up as i thought the guy was really talented, it would not have made any difference had he sculpted the sydney opera house or a guy sitting on a dunny.

i said i dont support animals being used for human entertainment, i'm not a typical animal rights fighter, breaking into chicken sheds or letting cows out of fields in the night.

i just believe a lot of animals get a raw deal in life, make me happy or else.

horse racings not ending because i dont like it, neither is greyhound racing or any other stupid thing we ask (tell) animals to do to please us.

as allways, money speaks loudest.

Dave, I appreciate foo is a much loved companion and very dear to you, as my dogs are to me, but lets not kid ourselves.

The pet industry is built completely on what is of interest to the human owner and totally opposed to the interests of the animal. Sure we all have seen the footage of the practices of some within the greyhound racing industry, but likewise we have also seen the photos of the puppy farms. ( and I recently saw some "other " photos on a phone relating to the dog food industry that where rather confronting and are unlikely to ever see the light of day ). And yes, thats the plastic bags of plastic food we buy " nice n cheap", for our pets from the supermarket every week.

Not only do these dogs and cats get sentenced to life in an artificial human prison for the term of their natural lives, they are completely cut off from all natural behaviours. They never get the chance to just run for miles or chase a rabbit or eat bones from an animal carcase ( OOHH YUCK ) Hang on, my farm dogs do all of that stuff, but people acuse me of being cruel to them when they are chained on the back of my ute. Heck we even compulsarily castrate all but a few " special " animals depriving them of ever having a family. Anyone who believes that animals dont have very strong maternal instincts has not had much to do with animals. Imagine the outrage if we compulsaralry castrated all but a few " special " humans.......

The whole, cruel pet industry is built upon humans need for companionship and entertainment at the expense of the animal. It is every bit as exploitive as other forms of animal treatment. If we decry horse racing or dog racing as just for humans entertainment, and the animals have no say in it, we also need to abolish the pet industry.

Personally I think think that would be a very sad day as pets provide valuable companionship to so many people. Much better to accept that we all exploit animals in some way or another and accept the realities of our exploitation.

But its all OK isnt it, coz its us, not some-one else doing the exploiting !!!

Agreed david, its a beautiful sculpture and the guy is a true artist. Its a pity everything has to get hijacked by the permenantly outraged. ( see post 3..... )

Another difference between the racing industries and the pet industry is that while there have been obvious, well documented breakdowns in systems of registration and oversight of horse and greyhound owners, stables and trainers, there is at least a regulatory and oversight system in place. This system has been used to try to clean the industry up when problems have occurred.

The pet industry has no such regulatory body. Any drug dependant, low life can own a dog or a cat and neglect or beat them and unless they are brought before the courts by the RSPCA, there is no system in place to stop them. Basically pet owners have no governing body overseeing there activities and are completely unregulated.

I,m not advocating the removal of the pet industry myself ( or the racing industry for that matter ), but the obvious similarities in the cruelties involved in both industries make it imperative that people who vehemently oppose racing on animal welfare grounds should also oppose the companion pet industry just as strongly. Refusal to accept that animal exploitation occurs by owners and participants in both industries is nothing but hypocrisy.

My view is that humans have bred and used animals for various purposes including food, pack animals, work horses and companions for tens of thousands of years. Maybe in time that will change and the Vegans and animal rights campaigners may win the social debate. Is that a bad thing ? In our increasingly changing technological world, maybe not.

But for now we are ALL still reliant on exploiting animals for food or entertainment, so lets just accept it and ensure we treat them as well as we can. It is highly hypocritical of animal rights campaigners to single out one industry as any worse than another, just because they personally don't use their particular services.

Having been associated with dog rescue for many yrs, on the whole it hasnt been the " drug dependant, low lifes" who have surrendered/mistreated their dogs, it's been more the " drug free, middle class" who grew tired of it once a baby came along, their dog grew old or bigger than what they "assumed" it would, ( how big did think a GSD would grow?), it interfered with their social life etc etc ..... Name any excuse you like I have heard 'em all

I've come across a few cruel farmers as well but that a whole different story

Our local council by-laws require all dogs and cats to be microchipped and sterilesed (unless they are kept for bereeding purposes) the problem of course - especially with cats - is policing those rules.

Its quite likely that the dog rescue groups have more to do with a certain demographic who are willing to hand in unwanted pets, hence the clientelle you have dealt with.

. The real low life's never go near a dog rescue centre and just drown their unwanted pets or worse. We currently have a cat that we didn't really want, but most of its litter mates where battered to death over a period of days by druggy low life's ( crack cocaine users ) and we had the chance to rescue this one. ( the only one from the litter that did not suffer the same fate as the others. ) Its a lovely cat and very gentle natured. No authorities or rescue centres heard about this little atrocity and they would rarely hear about other similar circumstances..

Yes there are A LOT of cruel and heartless pet owners as well as some irresponsible farmers, greyhound trainers and horse stables. But that is exactly my point. Humans currently use animals for all sorts of reasons. Companionship, food and entertainment. As I have said in previous posts, we just need to accept that currently our society is built around the exploitation of animals and try to make sure that we treat them as kindly as we can.

If at some point in the distant future we are able to move away from our reliance on animals, that may not be a bad thing, but the world will look completely different to the one we live in today and there will be a lot less animals inhabiting the planet.

If people are going to campaign for animal rights, at least have some consistency and campaign to end the "ownership " of pets as currently the pet industry is the most wide spread, ( in terms of animals affected ) abusive, cruel and expliotive of all animal practices.
