That is ridiculous-so dangerous. Is there a supermarket just opposite the wharf or something? I can't imagine how so many trolleys got in the water otherwise.

Maybe they need to do what was done in my area a few years ago. I live in Vic, in the City of Casey and they passed a regulation that every supermarket trolley in their area would need to be coin operated. At first I was not impressed but I have to admit, it has made an absolutely enormous difference.

Back before that happened, it was not unusual to see trolleys left along the walkway near our house, or in streets. Not 6 metre long strings of them like in the article, but enough that the council needed to send out helicopter search & locate missions.

The shopping centre carpark areas were the worst though. Shoppers would just unload their trolley and leave it next to their car spot as they drove away. It was a pain as you arrived, as you might see a good parking spot but have to get out to move a trolley.

Fast forward to today. I have not seen a trolley on the walkway in years. Seeing one abandoned in the street is extremely rare.

There are none left lying around in the shopping centre carpark, everyone returns them.

It's the way to go. I'd even suggest $2 coin slots only on their trolleys, anything to try to dissuade people using them to cart things down to the water.

we had a similar problem at the end of the wallaroo jetty, about a year ago they pulled up a load of trash, old fridges, shopping trolleys, bikes, you name it.

the nearest supermarket was about 5km away.

its moved now, its closer, maybe 2km, so i guess the problem will be worse.

That's really weird. Why on earth would anyone carry an old fridge down to a jetty to dump it? There are hard rubbish collections a couple of times a year in most areas, wouldn't it be easier to just leave it on the nature strip then?

actually until recently you could drive right to the end anytime there was no ships in port, now there are removable barriers.
