This is still quite legal in many countries, and it is not that long ago that it was also legal in OZ .

This is taken from a Tractor Operators Manual.... and I love it

( Japan does not require some the safety shields and roll over protection structures (ROPS)

that are required on US Tractors. Instead, they rely on the operators to know how to safely

operate their tractors and do not try to mandate that tractors be idiot-proof. It is recommended,

however, that you install the necessary safety shields and if you are working on any types of slopes,

rough terrain, or with a loader - you install ROPS)

I grew up in a relatively remote rural area. It seems like everything we did for entertainment as kids is now illegal or frowned upon as anti-social.

Rabbit trapping with steel jaw traps - illegal

All the kids had slug guns or .22 rifles by age 12. no registration, no licences. We used to shoot cans and paddy melons and maybe the occasional sparrow or rat. - now illegal & frowned upon.

As teenagers we used to ride clapped out, unregistered old motor cycles in the scrub on weekends, exploring bush tracks and desolute fallen down homesteads - OK it wasnt quite legal then, but the cops left us alone as long as we stayed away from the towns - Now the scrub is all national parks and riding old unregistered motor cycles is a hanging offence.

Bird nesting ( climbing to the top of tall trees and collecting rare birds eggs ) - now another hanging offence

After heavy rain we would take old bomb cars out to the remote clay roads and slide them around on the greasy mud.... At least we learnt how to handle a car when it slips on the road.

Bonnet sliding - get an old FJ Holden bonnet, tie it to a long rope, hooked to an old bomby car and slide it on the wet grass of a paddock - OK it may not be illegal but where are you going to find an FJ bonnet now ? AND kids today are that wrapped in cotton wool that mummy and daddy would never allow it.

Spot lighting for Kangaroos rabbits & foxes- the roos where in plague proportions in dry seasons, coming out of the scrub looking for water. They used to smash up the fences and allow stock to escape into the scrub to turn into ferals. - teenagers with guns, driving unregistered spottlighting, beach buggies with no lights up the roads and shooting roos & foxes - It almost makes your head hurt thinking about it doesnt it ???

Bushies ( giant bonfires ) made by using front end loaders to heap up complete dead trees, accompanied by fireworks - Fireworks now illegal, bonfires -never in the town and not without a council permit & CFS notification in the bush with fire appliance on standby

RIDING ON UTES - one of our favorite passtimes was to put a few bales of hay on an old truck as seats or pile a group of young teenagers in the back of a couple of utes and go " bunny chasing ". The idea was to dazzle the bunny with a spot light and all of the kids would jump off the ute or truck and try to run the rabbit down on foot. It used to work and the occasional hapless bunny did actually get caught. - Now the health and safety officers would require the kids to wear fluro vests and ride in a bus with seatbelts. They would need to exit the truck in single file and walk not run.

And we wonder why kids sit in their bedrooms on their phone or computer screen all night.

GEE, I thought I must have posted that. But the guns came long before 12, and no mention of how many kids and shotties can go

duck shooting on a single honda MC (A,7) Or how many you can fit on said MC just for fun (A,13)

Para Road, 7.45pm on a Saturday night, what's the odds that some of the boys decided to kick on elsewhere after the cricket club Xmas break-up closed at Monty or Lower Plenty - following an early end to the game because of the washoiut.

The thing is, I never saw or heard of a kid accidently getting shot or anything stupid going on with the guns. Gun safety was drummed into us by our parents and older siblings. Our parents made sure the guns where safe ( usually new ones given as Christmas or birthday presents ) .

We where taught to ensure chambers where empty and only loaded when use was imminent, safety catches on, barrels pointed to the sky or the ground when walking or moving on a vehicle, safety procedures followed before anyone dismounted utes or spotlighting buggies. Magazines and chambers emptied and safety catches on before the ( usually wild ) ride home etc.

We where only kids but we seemed to understand the potential of what could go wrong with guns. As for the cars and motor bikes............well.............um..........lets just say we where quite " experienced " drivers by the time we got our licences.

and riding a motor cycle 40 km.s along sandy bush tracks back to civilisation with a dislocated shoulder or broken ribs is not much fun. but we did it and survived happy days..........

Broke more bones on the footy field, than I ever did on a MC,.............Luckily most of them did not belong to me.

and anyway, the home made billy carts were far more dangerous

We used to make ours with ball bearings,

not the stupid big cart wheels

The basic design was the same though.

We were always able to scrounge up some wheels,....Bad luck if Grandpa wanted to mow the lawn, we had important stuff to do.

The steering was always dodgy and we invented plenty of braking mechanisms, but they seldom worked very well, which usually

resulted in a big bail out before the pending disaster
