Poor Corellas

Haven't seen a large flock in Coleraine for years now.
I actually miss their raucous presence.
I don't understand why everyone hates them so.
I much prefer to woken up by them than the nong with the V8 ute across the street

If ever you get to any area they destroy you'll see why they are hated which is due to their destructive behavior.

The flock here is estimated to be over a 1000 strong and they have destroyed numerous trees causing

thousands of dollars of damage to golf courses,ovals and crops.

The trees they've nested in are now dead and they remove every bit of new growth until it dies (not for food

but simply for something to do).

We used to be visited regularly by a flock of a thousand.
They are free native creatures.
They ripped up the lawn, I don't care.
Tried to destroy my roof, didn't. So I again don't care.
Corellas before people is what I want.
People awful, Corellas great

go-tazz they are obviously being pushed to the edge of where they can happily survive so will die out soon.
That'll make you happy and hopefully the temperature will rise enough to kill all the humans and I'll be happy

We get quite a few of them, down my way, cant say it 1000's but certainly many hundreds, they dont stay still long enough for me to count them lol. I dont mind them at all ..... They are a tad quieter than screaming Sulphur Cresteds which inhabit the gum trees behind me through Summer and wake me up around 5am

There was one on a bollard just outside the shops the other day, literally half a meat pie in his claw with a look in his wee beady eye like "You touch my pie and I'll fight ya"

No it wont make me happy as that's not why I posted (it was to make people aware that they get out of hand

when their flock numbers get to high and they become a bit of a pest).

We are mid North of Vic so this lot hasn't been pushed anywhere as they have always been here.

I don't have a problem with them being here but their numbers are getting out of hand and they are causing to

much damage (we have a tree near where our car is parked and it can be covered with the bits and pieces that

they removed from the tree day after day because they become destructive).

There are thousands of trees around here but they will go to one tree with quite a few of them and start

removing all the new growth just because they can.

They are a destructive bird and when you get over a 1000 of them in a flock they can cause a lot of damage.

Maybe we shouldn't have destroyed so much of the natural environment that any species is forced to get closer to what little remains which is mainly in towns in the country now.
When you see miles of farm land without a single tree on it it's no wonder that native species are having to group where there is the odd tree.
Also these birds are probably smart enough to now know that there is some protective affect of being in a large flock when being shot at by farmers.
Every wild species is being pressured by humans.
It's our fault that wild animals are forced to change their behavior.
Human culling is what is needed

And according to the ABC link they are indeed wanting food, not doing what they do 'just because they can'.

Just another example of wildlife forced out of their habitat by humans and then being treated as the enemy.

I was outside very early one morning a while back, and a flock of cockatoos landed in a tree overhanging the unit across the laneway.

They promptly started ripping the gum tree to shreds, with bits, pieces and whole small branches landing on the roof of the verandah, making a hell of a racket (and mess).

After about 5 minutes the bloke comes bursting out of his front door in his dressing gown, holding a baseball bat.

He looks around, sees what the problem is, and visibly relaxes as the flock takes flight.

He looks across at me and says "Stop laughing you **bleep**, it's not funny, they woke me up and I thought I was back in bloody Vietnam again".

The ABC would probably get their info from some greeny and as they don't always check facts they just run

with what they've been told (which up here is not the case as there is plenty of feed for them).

We have state forest and there are thousands of trees around here but they choose to destroy single trees for

no other reason then being a detructive bird and because they can (they don't eat anything from those trees so

they are not a food source).

The latest trees that they have being nesting in are now also dead the same as the previous ones due to their

behavior and that will never change.

When you physically see what they do you can see how destructive they are.

Our home fronts onto a river gully that runs through our town. It has large areas of river red gums along with shrubs and swampy areas etc. In the summer, just on dusk each evening, a huge flock of corellas flies down the gully, across the roof of the house in preparation for roosting a kilometer or so away where the river forms an estuary with the sea.

You can hear the flock coming from hundreds of metres away as the birds screech and squark. It takes a minute or two for the birds to fly over, just on sunset. Its absolutely brilliant and one of the highlights of living on the river. Occasionally the flock will stop over in a huge gum tree in the next door neighbours yard if it is in flower, dropping twigs, flowers and poo on the garage roof............ Corellas.......... Luv em.

Same thing happens here in Summer, Lorikeets, Sulphur Cresteds, Galahs, Corellas, Black Cockys ...... gets a tad noisy at times
