Canola (Rape seed) is chock full of Glyphosate too.
Deodourisers, bleach and who knows what else and we are told it's healthy.
I'm a diabetic so can't eat a lot of rubbish called food as I can't take medication due to the side effects being worse than the diabetes
So I can usually avoid processed foods but sometimes due to a lack of money and being stuck in a house with people that don't eat real food I have to eat some rubbish and it's not good

I would expect the levels of roundup in cereal crops would be minute as the spray is only used on the ground before the crop is sown. The only way roundup could find its way into cereals would be in a drought situation ( such as we have now ) where there has not been enough moisture in the soil to activate the quick breakdown of the chemical.

Canola, as Martin has mentioned is a completely different animal. Some states in Australia allow GM canola to be grown which is completely tolerant of roundup, allowing it to be sprayed on growing crops to control weeds. If that worries you, the next bit will give you nightmares. As the Canola plant reaches maturity of seedset and is still green, but nearly ready for harvest, the crop is sprayed with roundup to " desicate " it. Artificially drying the green plants off in a few days to promote fast and early harvest. ( this is to prevent " lodging" or the small seeds falling to the ground due to wind damage. ) It is logical that this would cause excessive contamination of the seed with roundup, both in plant tissue and also externally from contact.

The vegans who try to harass and force people to only eat plant based foods as it is supposedly healthier, completely ignore the high levels of chemicals, pesticides and processing that goes into most plant based foods. With a lot of our meat grown in the semi arid areas of Australia which are not suited to growing crops, it is highly likely that meat and even dairy products grown in Australia will carry less chemical residues than the majority of plant based foods.

edit - It is non GM canola that is sprayed with roundup pre harvest. GM canola is sprayed with Gromoxone, a much more poisonous and dangerous chemical. Thats what your politically correct, vegitarian / vegan, canola based margarine is laced with folks........... Eat Dairy !!!

That's true. The real problem as with so many other things is over population of humans who are devouring and destroying everything in our path.

There are so many humans on the planet who need feeding that we are using dangerous farming practices to supply enough fruit, grains and other plant products to enable the worlds population to eat food. And as with everything else, consumers want everything supplied as cheaply as possible, ie. we don't want to pay double or triple the price for the food we eat to enable farmers to grow it using more sustainable, but less productive farming practices. ( and if we did, poorer nations people would starve as productive land would not be producing to maximum capacity. )

The other point I was trying to make is that Australia's livestock is often grown on less productive soils in more arid climates that are not suited to crops. This results in much of Australia's broadacre meat production actually being genuinely cleaner, greener and more healthy than our plant based products which are grown in mono cultures with multiple applications of herbicides and pesticides. Something that is never mentioned by the PC class who push a plant based diet.

As with most things PC. the truth is often an inconvenient embarrassment that needs to be howled down at every opportunity, to ensure rational thinking does not get in the way of the latest fashion and control of the masses through mindless, herd mentality. example - radical veganism.

Basically a humans biology is designed to eat a certain amount of meat. We have the teeth for it, we have the digestive system for it and if we don't eat meat, our bodies become deficient in certain vitamins and minerals. Vegetarianism and veganism is an artificial concept, that has evolved from a wealthy urban population living in an artificial man made environment that is disconnected from nature and the natural environment. It is part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Not true, my daughter has been a vegetarian for over 20 yrs. She is one of the fittest, healthiest people I know.

I'm into part of the Maasai diet.
Mainly milk and beef without the blood.
Since I became a diabetic and changed my diet I no longer get tonsillitis every year and some years haven't even had a sniffle.
I don't get the flu shot and have only had the flu once since becoming diabetic too
I also haven't had as many bouts of food poisoning

On the down side I did get Lysteria from a bottle of milk earlier this year and boy that sure made up for not being sick very often over the last ten years

You seem to be missing my main point though.

The global population has reached a point where there is barely enough high quality, non urbanised land to actually feed all of the worlds people. If we all became vegitarian or worse still vegan, all of the worlds low rainfall, non arable country which currently farms animals often without chemicals, would no longer be in production. Taking this amount of farmed land and the protien produced from it out of the food system would cause global starvation.

If we then move our worlds farming systems to organics or biodynamics removing chemical fertilisers, pesticides and weedacides from the system, global food production would fall even more dramatically to the point of causing global instability that makes oil wars look like a Sunday School picnic.

I suspect that is the real reason governments are afraid to ban Glyphosate ( Roundup ). It is a very cheap, very effective and relatively safe chemical that has become one of the cornerstones of global crop production. Remove it and food will DEFINATELY increase in price considerably due to increased costs of production and lower yields and the resultant food shortages will further exacerbate the price problem.

We have already seen what happens when governments bow down to uninformed, populist opinion and base policy on appearances instead of rational thought. Australians are already complaining loudly about the dramatic rises in energy prices and falling living standards caused by people demanding we move to a low carbon energy system. You want low carbon energy, costs will rise dramatically...... simple.

The answer to Australia reducing our emmissions is to move our energy systems to low emmissions natural gas which we have more supplies of than any other nation. Its just that we are selling it cheap to the Chinese and putting subsidised, high input, short working life solar panels on peoples roofs to make them feel good and give the appearance of doing something.........Stupid populist policy.

Exactly the same thing WILL happen if we ban Roundup. Our food will permenantly increase in price dramatically, causing another major fall in Australians living standards. And like solar panels instead of gas, it wont actually solve anything. Once roundup is gone, farmers will move to the next cheapest chemical that does the same job......... Gromoxone.............. Roundup may possibly kill a very small number of people slowly through cancer and do a small, measurable amount of damage to the environment. Gramoxone,...........One hundred times as poisonous, three hundred times more dangerous to handle ( I,ve sprayed plenty of both ) and basically downright scary stuff.

Go ahead and ban roundup. It will be great for me as my broadacre farm is already cropped using mainly biodynamic principles and my near city, hills based prime lamb business uses virtually no Roundup up all. I,ll do very nicely out of it thanks as increased commodity prices feed straight into my bottom line without any increase in costs of production.

As for the rest of Australia's population and especially those struggling on low incomes, the rapid food inflation and resulting falling living standards will put low income families under even more financial presure.

My main point is that the Roundup is a cornerstone of global food production. OK Dont faint lol ....... I totally agree with you on that point ..... I rarely buy F n V as I grow my own so I am able to freeze or preserve it ...... I also realise I am in the minority these days, especially with some many people now living high rise living and on smaller house blocks.

There are far more toxins people need to be concerned out these days, carbon monoxide springs to mine but no one ever seem to jump up and down about that one. Yet, those who live in the larger cities are breathing in heaps of it each day.

Gramoxone ( chemical name Paraquat ) is the next most common and cheapest chemical after Roundup for weed control. This will definately replace Roundup, should Glyphosate become banned. I have sprayed tens of thousands of litres of spray over the years and even built my own boomspray with truck wheels, 2000 lt. tank and 50 foot booms. There was only one chemical I was genuinely scared of and avoided using and that was Paraquat. One drop of chemical on your leather boot and you run the risk of the chemical infusing the leather and leaving a large ulcer on your foot where the drop landed. Get it in your eyes and blindness is highly likely.

In many developing countries Paraquat ingestion is used in over 80% of ALL suicides due to its ready availability and high toxicity. It has been proven to cause Parkinsons Disease and is a truly nasty chemical. Problem is there are not really any other affordable, comparable, multi species, effective herbicides available. Its like a Penacillin in the antibiotic world. When it comes to herbicides, Roundup and Gromoxone is all we have.

OK so we ban Glyphosate ( Roundup ) AND Paraquat ( Gromoxone ) ............Great ......Job Done......... Wealthy Australians will survive even if they have to pay double or triple for their food, but people in developing countries ?????
