Do people take a DNA test to determine if they are considered to be "Aboriginal" or not? The photo of Mr. Knight and Mr. Perry is a bit shadowed, but I thought that Aboriginal people would look more like someone from India?

after 200+ years of being poorly treated i think the aboriginals still have a long way to go to catch up with us white folk on the bad treatment on racial grounds.

i'm so glad i was born to white parents where i was when i was.

i cant imagine what is must be like to be brown skinned in a country run by predominately white folk.

not all whites are racist and not all aborginals are criminals

but plenty of white folk think aborginals are dirty criminals

and plenty of aboriginals think all whites are (when push comes to shove) racist. (i suspect)

if someone wants to say they are aborginal its no skin off my nose, as long as they are good people it makes no difference to me.

i sure wouldnt be going onto their property to try to remove a flag or tell them they cant be aborginal because i said so.

i presume both these white worriors of truth will be suffering for a long time for their actions.

she might as well close her travel shop and he may as well be at centrelink monday morning standing with the dole bludgers and aboriginals he despises asking for a handout.

i know he didnt say anything about the unemployed but with his attitude to aborginals i can only imagine his views of those collecting the dole.

It would appear that you can't determine the heritage of a person just by looking at them. That being the case, a couple of more questions occur to me. Are the benefits offered to those who consider themselves to be Aboriginal great enough to encourage false claims... and... isn't it a bit difficult to discriminate against someone because of a heritage that isn't visible to the naked eye?

Pair of peanuts.
They will have their supporters but both have now lost their businesses due to sheer stupidity.
Serves them right.
My sister has dark skin and was constantly harassed as being an Aboriginal.
A recent Ancestry DNA test showed that we are part Congolese.
There's many people I avoid because they are racists.
One of my ex girlfriends brothers is a racist moron.
He was asked for a cigarette by an Aboriginal in Adelaide casino nearly thirty years ago and he still goes on about as if they killed his family and stole his farm.

I have no idea what benefits are available to those claiming Aboriginal heritage.

But on every Government form that has tio be filled out, the question is always asked -

"Are you Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander?"

I think the amount available is much the same regardless of the claimant's ethnicity, it's how and through which agency it is paid that varies.

There are quite substantial handouts available to Aboriginals and Torres Straight Islanders once they are registered in the system.

In the school system there are grants and subsidies not available to other children and the court system can help out with fees etc.

Some local councils in NSW will also "help" local Aboriginal home owners....not sure how well used that subsidy is though.

The benefits are listed on the AIATSIS site from your link and are:

grants (such as Indigenous housing loans, research and study grants)
university courses (with specific positions for Indigenous students)
Centrelink and housing assistance (Indigenous-specific)
employment (Indigenous identified positions)
school programs for Indigenous students.

These appear as though they could be fairly valuable, depending on one's situation... money, an education, housing... even a job.

Needs - should not simply mean - ethnicity.

Needs based is need - no matter your heritage .

Every form - to be filled - states the question - are you of.............

Just a question - given - the ' help' - ' aid ' - even having said we are ' sorry '.

Has it changed things.

Did it - has it made a difference - we are all 200 years later - all Australians.

My younger sister is part Indigenous and quite dark, adopted by my parents when she was very young.

(I must say she was NOT what some refer to as the stolen generation)

Growing up, she was continually harassed, abused and called all sorts of names.

Derogatory comments were not only directed at her, but also to our family.

She is now in her 50s and a number of years back she took steps to find her family

and managed to locate a half sister.

They arranged to meet at my sisters place, the day arrives and gets the knock on the door,

sister opens the door and they say hi to each other. Her sister then comes out with “your black”.

That was the end of them having any relationship, my sister told her to leave.

The sister never even made it through the front door.

My sister has never denied her heritage, yet she has never applied for any assistance

nor has she ever ticked the box “are you Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander”

She always refers to herself as being an Aussie.

Has been plenty of times when someone has accused her of getting a hand out.

If you want my sister to get angry, this is a sure way of getting her fired up,

and believes that handouts should be for the people in need, not be based on heritage.

Irrespective of her heritage, she has been, and will always be our sister and family member.

I have been called a racist on plenty of occasions, which I find laughable,

considering my sisters heritage, and my wife being Italian.

We have 4 sons, both the eldest and 3rd eldest

have dark skin and dark hair, the 2nd eldest and the youngest are light skinned and blond hair,

put the 4 of them together and no way would you pick 2 of them to be brothers of the other two.

In their school years the dark ones copped a bit of racial harassment

yet the other two were left alone.

I had very dark brown hair ( almost black ) and very olive skin, growing up I was constantly called a "wog". Given my ancestors came out here in chains from Ireland and England, it was really quite funny

Our 2 boys were called that often and a few other names, when they were younger it would upset them quite a lot,

and didn't want to go to school, now, they dont give a hoot.

Wifey and I were only talking about it earlier tonight.

She reminded me of a funny thing that happened with our youngest when he was in high school.

There was a group of Italian kids and to be part of their gang you had to have Italian blood,

and he was able to join the gang because some kids were 3rd, 4th 5th etc, cousins of wifeys.

He came home one day and asked if he could get his hair dyed black so he would look more Italian........ LOL

My mother in-law regularly calls him the blonde wog, not only does he like it, he takes it as a compliment.

It does sound funny when she says it because she has a heavy Calabrian accent.
