its a worry when religous 'peace' loving people decide to take up arms.

i fully expect stories of innocent people getting murdered because they looked 'suspicious'

i follow a youtuber from the USA called 'furry potato' who is whats called a 'first amendment auditor'

its a small movement trying to test the ability to use the american citizens rights under their constitution by going out and filming govt and other entities from public view.

as enshrined in the US consitiution under 'free press'

she is a transgender former marine so she has had her fair share of bigotry in her life.

she has many youtube videos showing herself getting attacked and even shot!

because she was filming from a sidewalk!! and someone didnt like it.

There you go again - pretending to be an expert on religions and what they teach/preach/believe. I'm not aware that the bible says you have to let others attack you without defending yourself. Learning how to shoot doesn't have to mean you intend to shoot someone dead but could mean they want to be able to shoot the gun out of someone's hand.

They are allowed to arm to protect themselves. There is a distinct difference.

A difference which defines the line between freedom and tyranny.

I'm not a gun fan but I can understand where they are coming from.

You have to remember the history. If you have ever read a few stories of those who survived the holocaust of WW2, they say over & over they believed that if they were peaceful and put up no resistance to the more and more draconian regulations against them, that reason would prevail and people would see they were no threat.

As we know, it didn't work, they were just sitting ducks.

I believe the jews after the war decided not to let that happen again.

You start by saying... anti semitic violence continues to rise.

I imagine that if some of them are learning to shoot guns, it just means they are learning to defend themselves. They live in a society where a lot of other people, including some real loonies (in my opinion) can easily get hold of guns.

My son regularly goes to shooting training, he knows how to use a gun and has used it, but that doesn't mean he is a homicidal maniac and about to go out and shoot anyone.

I think the main problem in society-something I had trouble coming to grips with till i was older- is that there is no such thing as unilateral peace. It has to be a 2 way process and sometimes unfortunately, people need to defend themselves.

I have a choice.

To live in a country where it is not necessary to have several assault rifles in the house. Supposedly for hunting. The only animal I know that requires an assault rifle to kill is a human.

Be that as it may, very few people get killed by idiots wielding firearms in this country. Therefore we don't need the right to bear arms. Therefore our society is arguably saner than yours. Therefore we are not unfortunate. Or oppressed, for that matter.

Applying for a Permit to Acquire a Firearm (PTA)

You can apply for a PTA a firearm online at the Service NSW website: www.service.nsw.gov.au

What you'll need to complete an online application:

A MyServiceNSW Account linked to the NSW Police Force
Your firearms licence or permit number
Full address details of where you will store the firearm
If applying to acquire a handgun for sport/target shooting you will also need:
- Club Confirmation form completed by a club official
- Pistol Firearms Safety Completion Certificate (for probationary pistol licence holders only)
Credit card for payment of the $30 PTA fee (unless you are a Primary Producer, or you have a fee exemption status as a Pensioner recorded with the NSW Police Force Firearms Registry)

When the PTA is issued it will be posted to you and you may then acquire your firearm on presentation of the issued PTA to your firearms dealers.

Only someone from the US would come up with that as the rest of the world sees it as being forced as in that

they have no choice but to arm themselves due to easy availability of guns to the general population.

Because nutters/criminals,etc and any other human being is allowed to own a gun regardless of any so called

control the ordinary citizen is forced to buy a gun to defend themselves.

Then you call it a line defined between freedom and tyranny and that is only on the interpretation of the 2nd

amendment on whether the right to bear arms is only for the sole purpose for the raising of a militia to protect

the country or states from the Government or invaders.

Yet that is not the case as the gun lobby is in control and as decided by the supreme court and it's the vote of

those 3 out of 5 judges that are now responsible for any further deaths that occur in the US including the

22.000 that die of suicide each year where a gun is used (including 1000 children).

When you force a citizen to arm themselves for their own defence then you take away their freedom.

How many senseless murders are commited in the US each year because some idiot has a gun and decides to

shoot and kill someone because they can and those judges and a lot of the US citizens say they can because

they say they have the right to bear arms and are therfore responsible.

That's how the rest of the world looks at the US and the 2nd amendment (not as a right to own guns but a right

to kill it's own citizens and themselves because they wont believe a document in the way it was written and

instead have put their own death sentence on the citzens that are killed each year).

It should be noted in 1788 - the ratification of the Constitution - there were 13 States & a population of 4 million.

The ' founding fathers ' left room for amendment - but did they ever imagine - 397 million - all needing to ' defend ' themselves.

Many people here in the US don't own guns and don't feel "forced" to own one or more to protect themselves from their fellow citizens. I don't own any guns and have lived here all of my life.

The "protection" of owning a gun isn't always so much an everyday need as it is an insurance policy against the rise of a government that may wish to take away our rights and freedoms.

Making guns illegal wouldn't stop criminals from buying them any more than making drugs illegal stops a substance abuser from buying drugs.

I think it can be a matter of perception and the usual American perception is that no one in Australia is allowed to have a gun.

I don't think that is true at all. There are millions of guns in Australia.

What is very different though is availablility of guns. Over here, you have to jump through a few hoops before you are qualified to own one.

I think that is perfectly reasonable. There are very few other areas of life where you have complete 'freedom'. If you want to drive a car, you need a licence. Want to be a doctor, teacher, tradesman, you'll need to study and qualify.

Owning a lethal weapon is a big responsibility and anyone being granted that right should have to pass stringent tests.

The way i see it is that in US, the availability of guns has been too easy. Easier than getting a driving licence.

The US needs to tighten up qualifying conditions.

That is a world away from saying all guns should be banned.

I used to be on a message board with a Texan who was big into this attitude that Americans should have free access to any weapon. I once asked-where do you draw the line. What about machine guns, should they be able to buy them (his answer: yes)

What about a small missile etc (his answer: no limits)

But after being on a Brit/Aussie board for a few years and hearing our say, he changed to some extent. He came around to thinking that only some types of guns should still be accessible & ownership should be much more strictly regulated over there.

At the moment, there is no doubt too many dubious types in US have ready access to guns.

sadly for the USA its far too late to fix the gun problem.

no govt will touch the subject no matter how many children or babies are killed.

however here in australia we were lucky in a sense that martin bryant opened our eyes to how easy a single nutter could kill many people if he wanted too.

we then had john howard who pretty much on his own did something about it.

he acted like a leader!

whilst i dislike the man for so many things he did or tried to do when in power i give him kudos for his gun policy after the port arthur shootings.

there is no good reason for the general public to own machine guns.

not a good reason IMO for anyone living in suburbia to own a gun.

there are exceptions, farmers, hunters ect.

but joe blogs does not need to go out bush shooting anything.

It's never too late to put a better form of gun control in place and the first step is to ban all semi automatic

weapons of any kind.

It it had being illegal to sell semi automatic weapons in the first place those shootings may not have happened.

In simple terms the US in general is a dangerous place to live due to the law of the gun and lack of gun control.
